polish engine to make it look like chrome?

After i finish my turbo and all my engine work, I want to make it look pretty good in the end. I don't want to go chrome because its not really going to be a show car or anything, but I like the shine. If i went completely crazy sanding the valve cover, fuel rail, alternator, etc., and then cleaned, buffed, and polished it, could I get a near-chrome, almost mirror shine? I'm willing to spend plenty of time sanding with finer and finer grits.

Yeah, but you'll still need to seal it up with some high temp clear coat or something to prevent tarnishing. But yes, you could work your ass off polishing it up. Trust me though, it will take you FOREVER

I started polishing my HO manifold, got about 25 hours into it and now I'm saying the hell with it because its going to take me another 25 just to get it to a brushed aluminum look. Paint goes on tomorrow

I disagree:

I polish the 2200 valve covers in just a little over an hour and they come out like chrome (hard to see in the picture.) The GM STB is polished, the alternator will be looking like chrome and installed for this season, and I also polished the BIG metal piece and the support bars that go up to it on both sides (it's located under the plastic radiator shroud) and that'll be on for this summer, too.
