fiberglassing, need some help

here's my question. you know when you buy fibrglass kits, theyre completely made out of fiberglass. however, when you make something completely ot of fiberglass, it's not smooth, for obvious reasons. I usually smooth it out using a thin layer of body filler, however , I recently made "something" out of pure fiberglass and I dont wanna use body filler to smooth it out, so what is it that is used over bodykits to smooth them out, I know it's not body filler. so what is it, I saw it on pimp my ride once and it's some sort of gel like substance, oh and where can I buy it? thanks alot ppl

well basically when i fiberglass stuff, i mix it and apply it w/ a plastic scrapper to make it as smooth as possible. then just lots of sanding to make it perfect. most companies use a gel coat. thats probably what your thinking of

Please forget anything you see on "pimp my ride" in regards to body work.

Fiberglass kits are covered in a gel resin (white usually) that doesn't really smooth it out, it helps get it out of the mold. It is paintable, but not supposed to be used in the thicknesses required to smooth out fiberglass. The main reason fiberglass kits are smooth when you get them is because they come out of a mold, where the fiberglass was laid into and it came out of the mold smooth.

I think your best bet is to build it up with fiberglass, and sand it smooth instead of using fillers.
