This may sound ignorant to some of you, but I am still trying to learn. I have been told that all you need in order to do a ghost patterned graphic, such as "ghost flames" is pearlescent clearcoat. Does anyone know if this is correct, and if not, then what would be the proper procedure? Thanks in advance.

Yep, that's generally what they do.
You take it to a body shop, have them paint the pattern you want using a pearl coat. Then have them re-clear the whole car to blend it in.
There's other techniques as well. Any skilled painter should be able to do this for you. You're going to want to deal with an artist though, not just your average bodyshop worker.
There are alot of paints out there you can do it with. One is harlaquin (ppg) one of the more drastic changing colors, or you can do the pearl wich is in with clear coat. Personally i like the look of the harlaquin alot better you get multiable colors out of it rather with pearl you would have to mix a bunch of diff pearls togather and it still would not look as good IMO.

Would it work the same if someone was to airbrush the pattern as opposed to a full paint booth type job?

yah, just be sure to cover it with a couple coats of clear
anyone else got an idea?

ghosting is best done (or generally done) with a pearl coat... NOT in the clear. You lay down your base... tape up the design (or rather tape the area you don't want painted, leaving the design open), lay down the pearl... let set for a couple of min... untape... and clear the whole area/car. That's how we did my ghost flames. (and I'm an experienced auto body tech/painter, and an artist
)

BINGO!
That's how they were done on my old Z24, that I bought from Fetter. He did an amazing job on the design, and the quality of the paint job was just as top notch. It was done on a black Z, using a blue pearl, but until it was sprayed, it looked white in the can.

how much roughly would it cost the average person to have someone do this for them. ive wanted my design in ghost for soo long, just figured it was way too expensive to do before i get all my other mods done.

Just be carful make sure you see what the pearl will do on your color car, for example if you just spray pearl on a red car it will from some angles turn pink, and certain candy colors which are also used to creat some ghost flames turn weird colors as well.. To be perfectly corect true "ghost flames" are only done with pearl.. In my case I added 2 types of pearl and 2 types of candy with an off silver base then my car. Then the outline of the flames was done with a real light candy black (basically transparent black if you can picture that). Here this might help describe it
Now mine turn blue, to gey, to a bluish grey depending on the angle and lighting. Pure sunlight you can barley see anything.
that looks awesome fatalic. great pics

Well cost varies really. I've seen flame jobs alone start at $1500. But... if you have or have access to an air compressor and a garage... I might be able to drive up and help ya out for a good price. (couple of extra bucks on the side helps me a ton since I'm not making much where I"m workin at now). What kinda design and effect are you looking for? Shoot me an email if you have any questions or whatnot.

im in ohio do you know of any good shops to get my car painted
need a shop i can trust and cant realy find one
I'm in PA... but if you have a garage and access to an air compressor... I might be able to help ya out
what do you mix the pearl with... to the base?
or mix it in a intercoat clear then come back over with your clear.. thats what im doing with mine .. my graphics
<img src="http://registry.gmenthusiast.com/images/its2nv4/achop.jpg">
I actually highly recommend either:
1. Mixing it with the base OR
2. Just using a mixed pearl coat over it (like an extra base coat)
Unless you're highly experienced, and I do mean highly... I'd do it that way. If you don't know what you're doing with inter-coat clear... don't do it.
But personally... I think the #1 and #2 ways I've posted works much better.
Ok, basically here is my question...Is there a way, and if so how, to airbrush ghost patterns w/out going through a full paint job
