I'm getting my car painted in April and needed some advice on what paint to use. I had my car re-painted 3 years ago and a single stage paint was used. It has held up great and still shines like new.
I was wondering if I should go with base coat - clear coat this time around?? The reason is I want the car to have a deep wet look so I was wanting a lot of clear coat to achive this.
Any advice on what would be best??
Also, what type of effects are popular in paint now. I know pearls and metallics but is there anything else that can be added to white paint to make it stand out??

anyways, i'd go with a base coat - clear coat paint if you want depth..
besides giving it a nice shine, it's more forgiving and allows you to polish out blemishes easily.
and as far as any new effects, i'd go with some cool flames and graphics, topped off by APC stickers...that's 5-10hp aaron!!

pearl is something i personally like. get the brightest white possible

I'm having a shop paint it. I would hate to see what would happen if I attempted it.
I'm still deciding on adding a blue pearl to it or not. The problem i'm gonna run into is they cannot paint into the engine bay. I don't have the equipment or space to pull the motor so I'm afraid if I go with a blue pearl then it's gonna look real funky when I pop the hood and you see blue pearl everywhere except inside the engine bay.

I agree with every one else, basecoat clearcoat. The clearcoat holds up better, single stage the uv can fade the color over time. I also don't know if you would have much choices as far as custom paint in single stage. Of course you can get single stage in metallics and pearl, but if any dirt specs or boo boos are in the paint you can't buff it out or it will ruin the metallic, but if it has a clearcoat you can buff that without effecting the metallic. I prefer ppg myself, guess cause I've used it the most, but other brands are good too. If anybody has anything new or to get ideas, go to the house of kolors website. They are geared toward custom, I don't think they even make factory colors like dupont and ppg. I always thought the paint jobs that the color was faded from one shade to darker shades either from front to the back or top to bottom were kinda cool. Don't know how it would look in white though, going darker would be fading to grey. Don't see much scallops any more, but flames have always been popular. If anything I would think the single stage would be better now then it was because you would think they learn more over time, and they have polyurethanes now which are tougher then the lacquers and enamels back when. Painting isn't real difficult but it takes a lot of practice, and tough without a nice booth to paint in. At home you battle with temperature, trying to see through overspray and not great lighting, bugs and dirt, water from the compressor, and danger your health with the isocyanates in the hardener. Plus if you don't have the tools allready or plan to get good use out of them, you are better taking to a body shop. But a paint job will probably run $1500 and up with a higher line of base clear, depending on color and amount of work involved.

This paint job is gonna be up there in price. They are going to take apart the car and paint it inside out. It's gonna take a month to do it.

My personal preference is DuPont... but to each their own.
DuPont just came out with an acrylic/urethane based paint with the same types of colors that HOK uses. It's a little pricier than HOK, but has a longer life guarantee and there's TONS of options to use.
