Painted wing

I just finished the first coat of paint and noticed the paint has a rough feel to it, I used a spray gun, what did I do wrong?

Well... you used a spray can for starters.

How did you prep it before starting to paint? Painting isn't easy. It takes a lot of training and practice and the right equipment to get a mirror finish. You'll probably want to start calling around to get some quotes on having it professionally done.

I didn't use a can I used a gun, I shot the primer and it came out perfect, then I wet sanded and shot the first coat of base, then rough, maybe I didn't put enough reducer in the paint ?

Sorry man... it's late and I misread your post.

Hopefully someone will come along with better advice than I've got here.

How is it rough? Like a matte finish or like an orange peel?

Orange peel, this happened when I shot the primer then after I wet sanded it went away should I wet sand the base coat?

what kind of paint are you using and what are the conditions outside where your doing this

Well today it was about 60 I am in Southern Texas, I am using Duplicolor paint

lol....isn`t that rattle can??? if base coat is goin on rough a few things are wrong
1. mixed wrong today`s base coats primer`s sealers are not made to be under reduced or over reduced like the old skwel of yesteryear`s like ppg dbu is 1:1/2 drr reducer ppg dbc is 1:1 dt reducer no more no less
2. temputure has a big factor in it if it is 60 degrees outside ya need to use 70 temp reducer if it is 70 ya need to use 80-85 temp rducer if it is 90 ya need to use 98 temp reducer pretty simple there it follows a 10 to 15 degree rule
3. the size tip and air pressure of the gun today`s product`s need a hvlp or lvlp gun to properly atomize the material spray primer sealer and base at 35 to 40 psi clear should be at 40 or 45 now that all depends on the kind of gun ya use and the size of the tip don`t forget

ie: i use sata`s primer gun is a 1.5 base gun is a 1.3 clear gun is a lvlp gun at 1.4
ok so if the base goes on rough the product is dryin as it hits the panel so switch reducer`s and lower the pressure of the gun to about 35 psi on ur dial yes you can wet sand base coat as long as you re-coat the sanded base

that's not uncommon. the paint doesn't automatically lay down perfectly smooth. it lays down in a sort of bumpy texture (the orange peel effect). you'll have to wet sand it smooth before you clear it.

now it depends on if ya paintin in the garage or in a down draft heated booth
base coat is not always supposed to lay out rough or have orange peel some companies product`s do some don`t if it is layin out rough ya need a lesson on paintin it should lay out smooth not rough

Try shaking up the paint more...I used Duplicolor primer and spray and clear on my car, they all came out nice and smooth...but i shook each can until my arm was numb...

sounds like it is atomizing before it hits the surface or drying i had that problem in class before make sure your mixing right before you spray and the temp is correct basically everything big daddy said i think you might want to switch reducers or try overreduceing it it might help

Well I seemed to fix what ever the problem was, it think I had to much air pressure, 25 PSI seemed to do the trick. Thanks for everyones help this site is great
