Does the PCM learn?

Ive had people tell me that the PCM can "relearn" the fuel maps and stuff like that if the battery is left unhooked for a day or two.

So how much can the PCM adjust itself before tuning is needed?

What do you have done to it? Your profile seems to indicate that it is close to stock.

You don't have to unplug your battery, the computer is adjusting the fuel tables (or more specifically the fuel trims) all the time via oxygen sensor. If you unhook your battery, it will "relearn" the same way it does when you have your battery hooked up.

Bottom line is that unless you have a crazy build, a tune is a waste of money.

The ECU/PCM shoots for 14:7:1 AFR's during closed loop operation. It will do corrections for that. When you go Full throttle the car goes into PE (power Enrichment). It then is running off the tune of the car, or the hard files. Depending on what changes have been made to the car will depend on how close those are to what it needs to be.

I dont need a tune. I was just curious. Ive just heard that the computer can adjust fueling tables and that you can make it learn to run better by disconnecting the battery, reconnecting it and doing something like driving it WOT for while. I thought it sounded unlikely.

So basically the computer will shoot for the same AFR or for what the tune is from the factory unless it is modified via HPTuners?

In closed loop (which equals normal driving). It will shoot for 14:7:1. When you go into PE, or if you have a bad sensor and the car is running off the actualy tables in the ECU it is going to do what ever those tables say.

Meaning if your car is properly tuned for a nice safe AFR it will run at that. If you have modded your motor, but not tuned it likely it will not be safe.

it relearns fuel trims for stoich run (closed loop), thats it.

the PCM cannot compensate for modifications when in open loop (WOT)
