Is a WIDEBAND 02 SENSOR NECESSARY FOR TUNING on NA MOTOR??

HI Guys,

Searched on this but didn't find much. I just upgraded my INTAKE MANIFOLD (2.4L to 2.2L SWAP). I have bigger injectors to install as well. Ever since I got my car tuned with CAMS, I never really ran a "perfect" AFR. Days after tuning it seemed as though I was running real rich( could smell gas from exhaust) and the car wasn't performing like it was but still was much faster! I changed out my spark plugs, new air filter ( was super clogged and tuned this way). The car didn't run as rich but it was still evident I needed a re-check of my tune (I have never had the AFR checked since tuning a year ago). NO idea what the current AFR is.

In hindsight, I wish I had a wideband to tune with ONLY because I read that it is a must have option when you start to tune. I wonder if this is the main difference my tuner could not get me a good tune even though it looked pretty good on the DYNO?

I'm not TURBO so is a WIDEAND 02 SENSOR necessary to have once you start tuning in order to get a good AFR? I am about to get re-tuned with the manifold and bigger injectors. If I need a wideband, then I will get one before I tune specially if it means I can extract more WHP out of the tune. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

A wideband measures your AFR, so without it you wont know your AFR. Widebands are for any vehicle that you want to tune for precisely.

A dyno shop should have a "sniffer" that will do a good enough job measuring your AFR so you could get a decent tune.

There are ways to tune without a wideband (CHT and EGT gauges to name a few), but having a reading of your AFR's is generally the easiest method to base your tune off of and certainly worth investing in one (or more).

Yes you need a wideband. And Yes you can use a EGT gauge, but you need to know what temp goes with what AFR, so you still need a wideband at some point.

Widebands have become soo cheap to get now no reason not to.

Me thinks you don't spend much time around engines.

To the OP. I have my 1 month old AEM wideband kit. Ill sell it to ya for 150 shipped. Not bad considering it comes with an extra bezel, 2 face plates, a guage pod and all wiring.

some ls1 guys tune by the narrowband, theres a document floating around out there that explains how to do it but its a different process as those cars are MAF based and have much better PCMs

for a J a wideband is virtually a must
