Switching 97" ECU to a 96"?

Like the title says, if i was to switch my 97"z24 ecu to a 96" ecu would i have any problems like throwing codes? Reason im doing this is i have a 96"z24 with the HO mani swap and im getting the egr code. I have a 99" ecu i want to put in the 96" witch will elimanate the code but i need that 97" harness to make it work but dont want the 97" to throw codes if i down grade one year on the ecu. Please let me know if i would run in to problems doing this cuz i have emisions 2 months down the road for the 96" and it wont pass unless i get ride of the code or put all the original stuff back on witch i dont want to have to go that far to get it to pass emisions.

I'm confused... So you want to put the '97 wiring harness on and use the '99 ECU??

You can't just plug a 96 ECU into a 97+ harness first of all...

Second of all, get the 99 ECU, don't go to a 96 that's a bastard year of ECU's, they can't be used with HPT or any other tuner. Either go full on 95 or go 99. 99 will plug into a 97 harness.

Yeah. Brian SpeedRacerz told me this is 1 of the ways i can get around that egr code. The 96" harness wont plug in to the ecu but the 97-99 will. Heres a link that i just found. Im just asking this cuz i dont want the 97" Running all funny after i do the swap but i dont think it should. From what i read on the other tread it was said to change out the oil pressure sensor on the 96" to a 97+ so maybe all i would have to do is just swap them over from each car?

I know how to do the swap with the 97" harness with the 99" ECU. But my questions is the cavalier thats a 97" if i was to put my 96" harness and my 96" ECU will it run just fine? I need that 97" harness to do the swap on the 96" cavy to get rid of the egr code thats why im asking and it will save me some money having to spend on a 97" harness for the swap unless i can find one for a good price then i will buy it.
