I was looking at alldata and cant really determine what ECU is in the 1995 Manual trans 2.3l Jbody. are the connectors on the ECU like the older OBD1 ECUs, such as beretta and Grand Am? or are this ECU's connectors more like 96 up OBD2 Jbody? Thanks.

I'm going 100% off Memory.....Its been a while.
Manuals are like the normal OB1's, and the Autos were like the 96's.
Team Grean should know....

yeah, well my real question is...
all data is saying both the manual AND the automatic have that databus link to the instument cluster to drive it like all obd2 cars have.
if the manual car is obd 1, then its ecu shouldnt be capable of doing that datalink, and must be like all other obd1 cars and have each guage driven individually, right??? or did they do something retarded like make the jbody a one-off with just this single change to the obd 1 wiring stratagy?
i personally think that alldata is wrong, and maybe i should ask them to exchange my 95 subscription for a 94 maybe? would that have the same ECU as the 95 manual car?

I know that manual and 3spd auto 95 Jbodys have a different computer than 94s but its still OBD1. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they do have some kinda serial data feeding the dash similar to OBD2 cars. They for sure have some weird data stream to the ALDL which is an OBD2 style connector but its not read as one. Only a GM tech 2 kind of scan tool has given me 100% accurate data off it. I have found a few other tools that can read some of it correctly (I think) using generic OBD1 GM cards, but stuff like spark advance gets wiggy (50-60 degrees advance?? Not accurate) and the dash gos nuts, the tach twitches instead of sweeps smooth and the speedo jumps randomly around. Leads me to belive a 95 dash is much like the 96+ dashes. Also makes it hard to tune off BLMs and stuff. All stuff I would like to investigate eventualy, but it has to thaw out first.

Going off of SI, its run off the same harness that the 95 auto's and 96's have.
Let me know what Pics you want, and ill post them off of SI...

95 has the same color wires/pin out as a 96 ecu, but the 95 has two connectors and the 96 has three.
all i really know.
I bought a 95 ecu and was going to try to bolt it up to my 96 and well... no good. Had access to a Pin out through a friend at a dealer at the time (brian-spdrcrz) and decieded not to mess with it . helped with one of the first 97 to 99 ecu swaps though. never went that route myself though.
anyways, good luck, cavfan knows his stuff on them era ecus.
Late to the party.
95 uses 2 different controllers. The box used with the 4 speed auto trans 2.3 equipped car is a pcm and has similar connectors to the later harnesses. The box used with the 2.3 manual trans is the same box used with the 2.2 3 spd auto or manual trans and uses two connectors with fewer pins. There are a significant number of differences between the pcm and ecm wiring harnesses and it's definintely not a plug n play swap. There is no connection to the IPC like the later PCM uses. I am currently working out the installation steps for switching a 97 harness to use a 95 OBDI ecm. The two pinouts are already completed and most of the step by step chart for terminal re-assignment is done. I still have to verify if / how security in the 97 car will be affected as well as double check the step by step to make sure I haven't missed anything. If you're trying to make a fully streetable vehicle with emissions equipment intact, the 95 will not support the digital EGR, sequential injection (no cam input), or fuel tank pressure sensor used in the later vehicles. The 95 ecm also requires a different ignition module and crank sensor from any other 2.2 that I've worked with. The crank sensor is a 3 wire sensor connected directly to the ecm, and the ignition module's only job is to fire the ignition coils based on input from the ecm (no built in signal processing). That's all I can think of for now.

I've confirmed the 95 car with ecm has no theft deterrent installed. But it looks like there's data exchange with the IPC on the class 2 data line connected to J2-20.

i swapped a 95 ecu into my 97. i just repin everything in the 95 plugs and the car is driving same as before, didn't have to change anything else except the map sensor.

When you say you "repinned" did you actually pull the pins out of the connector or did you just cut, and solder the wires?
I think ill just work with my 95 ma !!!!

yes i took the pins out of the connector and put them back in the 95 one, at the right position.
only the wires for the ignition needs to be solder, since the 95 is not sequential
