Alright, the racing season's over for me, I cracked up my Cavy, so now I've got a 93? v6 z24 that I'm going to put my 2.2 into over the winter. Yes, I'll probably be the first person ever to do the swap in that direction
All this year, the car's been running lean, because the tuned computer that was in it was fried and replaced with a stock one. The motor (as I've finally found out from the guy who built it) is a 91 2.2L block, bored .030, with a ported and polished head off a 94 Cavy (fuel injected). Air box is stock with a K&N air filter, exhaust is the stock header to 2" straight pipe going out the side, no cat or muffler. After it was tuned, it was dyno'd at 145WHP, but I can't afford to have it tuned again. I have an EEPROM programmer and spare chips, I've found TunerPro, and I'm sure I can find someone to put a PLCC socket on a computer (I'll probably buy a spare for this, just in case). What I need now is a wideband O2 sensor, some way to get readable output from it (would a multimeter work?), and an idea of what I should be doing. I'm an electronics guy, so a little soldering doesn't scare me, but I can't find any good build-your-own guides or even guides on how to tune. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?
You might be the first and there is a good reason why. Stick with the 3.1 v6. If you really want to swap look into the 3400swap.
When you buy a wideband you get a new wideband o2 sensor and some wiring to connect it to a wideband gauge that comes with it. No multimeter or soldering involved Search AEM uego on ebay so you have an idea what you are getting.

Huh, thought I had a sig set up here. The motor NEEDS to come out, I race my cavy in a 4 cylinder division, the only divisions that allow v6s are a cheater's class (any and all mods allowed) and a v8 division, but that requires an automatic. Will try them over at v6z24.com, thanks.
Here's a thought, only coming out at 145hp on ln2, BAAAD HUMAN, you still have a long way to go. Have you considered any hp upgrades, the problem with this motor is you really have to build it to get any hp out of it. The stock internals just aren't very friendly with boost, and the fuel delivery system wasn't designed for it either.
Or a 2.3 HO supercharged / turbocharged swap.
He is circle track racing which has lots of rules and guidelines. The 2.0 and 2.2 OHV motors are very common for this type of racing.

i always (and your all going to lol at me) thought about building a SOHC quad for track racing.....re grind the cam, use a 94 head, and a 160 thermostat, with a nice burn on the 27SF512...
IDN, better for the high revs then the push rod... maybe.

Ok, let me explain the rules in my class. Or better yet, I'll just say that I'm already breaking them. I'm in a class where the motor is supposed to be completely stock, no overbore, no ported heads, not even gasket matching. I'm probably going to be pushing the rules by running the stock z24 suspension with an RS/VL motor, but hopefully they don't know any better. I also didn't build the motor, it was built by someone who was hired by the car's previous owner, he got out of racing and gave me one heck of a deal on it. I haven't even taken it apart, I've been too busy building up my 84 Celica to have the time or money to do a teardown for no good reason.
Before I cracked up the car, I was pulling 6th and 7th place finishes, IMO pretty damn good for my rookie year. The guys who usually finish ahead of me run a Honda CRX, Geo Storm, Accord HB, 80's Mustang, and a Prelude, usually in that order. These guys have a real weight advantage, since we're not allowed to run lead, and they've got the motor offset to the left or centered (and we always turn left). Next year, I want to go out there with the z24 sway bars and a tuned motor, and at least make it into the top 5. Do you guys want to help me out, or insult me, my car, and my motor?
One thing I forgot to mention: payout for 1st place in this division is $75/race. If I went out and bought whatever the best tuning hardware/software out there is, or paid to have it professionally tuned, I'd never get my money back out of it. I race for fun, but I'm not making any money off it any time soon.
Get a wideband off ebay for about $150-$200. I'm not sure how the tuning program for ODB 1 works so not sure if you can pull the wideband reading in directly to the program to see it all on one screen as you can with HPT. Since this is a track car you would need a place to run it so you can see what your air/fuel readings are to see if you can lean it out more, or if it needs richened up some.
