I have a 98 z24 with the 2.4,It had blown a head gasket a while back and I disassembled the motor to replace the head gasket. When I checked the head it was a little warped,so I had it resurfaced. I then reassembled the motor using new gaskets all the way thru I also used new boltsI,i followed all guidelines as to tourqe and such. When I initially tryed to restart the motor it wouldnt start, then pressing the gas all the way to the floor it will start but will not stay running unless the gas is held atleast half way down. The car will not idle at all and runs rough as hell below 2000rpm,but above that it sounds great. I ran a compression test and got around 100psi on 3 cylinders and 240psi on the 4th,what could be the cause of this?Im pretty sure i have the timing chain back on correctly and apon inspection of the cam and valvetrain all looked good with nothing abnormal at all.I also hooked up a diagnostic scanner and all the sensors checked out ok.The motor ran awesome before the headgasket went(due to a small coolant leak on the radiator hose, and me running it way low on coolant)please help me,Im stumped as hell on this one. ALSO I WILL BE TAKING A VIDEO OF THE MOTOR AND IT RUNNING AND WILL POST A LINK TO IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE HOPEFULLY TOMMAROW
ANYONE PLEASE im loosing my mind over this damn car
lol @ 100 psi on the cylinders and 240 on one
Sorry I don't know what the cause would be, but that's definitely a problem.

Better pull the timing chain cover and rechek the timing. I had a customer's car come to be with almost identical symptons. The person who reaplaced his waterpump installed the tensioner wrong and it jumped time..

I would agree it sounds like it may be a tooth or 2 off on the timing.

Ok pulled the cover off,I belive it did jump time. I know the 2 cam gears line up with the holes underneath the gears, and i believe the crankshaft should have the keyway pointing straight up,lined up with the dot above the shaft,Is this correct? Also I discovered the guide at the top had busted in half, and the 2 peices lodged themselves on top of each other, keeping tension on the chain. How can I tell if my tensioner is any good?It doesnt have any tension now,but i thought it was oil pressure that builds the tension in it,correct? What is the correct way to install a new tensioner?
The cam gears should have the bolts going through the holes on top of the gear, not the bottom...As for the tensioner, do you have the 1piece or 12 piece?

I have the 2 peice, but i believe your wrong on the holes or misunderstanding me,i mean the holes thatare in the gears, need to line up with the holes in the housing in order to insert a tool to lock them if u r undoing the bolts on the cam.

You are correct, I meant to say vice versa.. If you put them in the holes at the top it, the exhaust cam still spins... I got in a hurry when typing... OOPS

OK,I got it back toghether now. What should I expect when I initially try to start it?I know it prob wont start immediatlly, but when it does start how should it run?I reset the computer,So I think I need to do the idle relearn thing,or do I?
