(quick note while you are reading this, I want to make it clear my car has been running like a champ for the past three months. starts up idles perfectly, cools down fan turns on enters boost, and blows off, just like its supposed to no gremlins have reared there head at all prior to tuning. I would have told PJ to give me another week, if I didn't feel the car was ready. you start with a solid base that's rule one. ) k read on.
did I have an interesting weekend. this past weekend PJ deiced to come up and help me tune my car, to try and lay down a base map until I could by HPT my self .unfortunately the car was not going to have any of it. for starters since I couldn't get a harness together in time.
we had to hack it up at Arbys. But what I didn't know was one of the pigtails had a loose connection, so the next 4 hours was spent trying to tune a 3cyl. after beating on the car constantly, I came to notice that my car was leaking trans fluid. PJ managed to find that the cap had a pin hole in it, and we filled the cap and went on our way. From there we accidentally managed to trip something that set the passlock system off, that was great, because we got to sit and wait at a zoo parking lot and really have a heart to heart. while this was going on my fan decided to keeping running, even after it was commanded to stop. so we pulled the relay, checked it, it tested fine. so we pluged it back in, and the fan stoped working. during this I managed to find the loose connection and get back to four cyls. we drove over to a golf parking lot, where PJ droped more new words then I had ever heard in a single sentance. for what ever reason HPT was not working at all with my car. any command he gave it would result in an inconsistent problem. there was know way of knowing what it was going to do next. and the best part about the whole thing. the car started to over heat. for what ever reason the fan was not coming on. (oh yeah a storm was coming in on this point.) so we pulled the relay checked it again, it was fine. so I made the next logical step and jumped the relay points and the car TRY TO FU*^&NG START. we jumped the relay and the got damn thing would crank. but with the relay in and a forced command for the fan to come on and nothing. ???
from there we said to hell with it and called it a day. we went back to my house and went our seprate ways broken and beten men.
the car sits now with the 440's in them. it will start and idle like a champ all the way to operating temp. the fan still does not come on it goes into a stock PE mode, and if it is shut off, and the started again hot it will take a bit of gas to keep it from stalling out. almost like its starting on another table and the STFT is going like crazy to come back to STOCIH
PLEASE HELP Ill call PJ and see if he can load up the saved data.
thanks guys

doing a write ENTIRE back to stock and see if that cures your problem.
also did you turn the key all the way back after each flash before starting? If not that could be your stalling problem right there.
If 1 cylinder goes down. the other piston that is in sync with that one. will fail also. so you were probably on two.

did you fail to read everything?

but sorry to hear you guys couldnt get anything goin for ya. id try and email hpt let them know its not doing what its supposed to and maybe see if another pcm will work?
some insight to the problems we were having.
i've helped tune a few jbodies, and whereas I usually have a somewhat pompous attitude, I fold completely and anyone with any insight please feel free to chime in here.
we installed the 440s and I altered the injector constant, changed the timing tables around for PE HO and LO modes (stock timing, but the HO table was copied over the LO table), I altered the fan program to run like the skwirls (usually stays on for 7 minutes after shut down, but Jcavi's fan just would NOT shut down), I also forced the car into PE mode (via the ECT vs OL/CL table. I set all values to 256 degrees which SHOULD have forced it to drop fuel trims and operate solely off the VE map. I set target AFR to 11.5:1. I also bumped up the VE offset to 50% so we could lean things out (9psi of boost roughly).
initially, the car behaved as I would have expected. It started a bit rough, but cleared up almost instantly. AFR was reading around 10.9:1 so we began tuning. I'd get occasional knock under partial throttle, which again I expected seeing as the Jbody ECU is alpha-n and cannot compensate for partial throttle boost.
After a few reflashes, it didn't seem to be getting any better.. then we noticed the trans leak.
After taking care of that, we had the fan problem/ ecu meltdown. I got "ERROR" on the odometer, which I've never seen NOR heard of before, so we tried a PASSLOCK relearn and it ended up working afterwards.
At this point, the fan would no longer operate. I then started seeing trouble codes for FAN CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION and SYSTEM TOO LEAN which, really wouldn't make sense seeing as the car was around stoich.
Here's the other kicker; the car is trimming fuel when I have it FORCED into open loop mode
At this point I was getting frustrated since we kept having problems and HPT was being twitchy as usual. After 8 hours of attempting to tune the car, giving up was the only logical choice.
Not to mention, jumping the terminals on the fan relay apparently starts the car.
I suspect that the wiring harness is either massively shorted, or is massively mixed up. The ECU could also have some problems from (what I believe to be) a botched flash attempt. Overall I'm disappointed I wasn't able to accomplish ANYTHING on Jcavi's car.. altho on a positive note we managed to stop his transmission leak.
my personal suggestion would be to replace the engine wiring harness and ECU and try again. Its the only way to eliminate any possibility of computer or wiring malfunction.
also:
Ron, the ECT was reading normal on the dash and on my logs. Normal op temp, would fall after a cool down, and would rise when we sat still.
Jah, I had Jcavi pull the key out after a flash and after a second start the car.
before you touch the harness try just the pcm....trust me I know all about what hpt can do to pcms sometimes. lol
Killed injector grounds in one pcm and another pcm got stuck in crank re-learn mode.
the only problem with that is that we disconnected the ecu, and the car still tryed to start while jumping the pins

Im beginning to think that my weird tuning problems and my fan problem are one in the same. crossing wires can screw with more then just the main concearn

Was ti your car that you have motor issues sometime back? Also wasn't someone else wiring in MSII at one point for tuning? If so is this the same wiring harness that wiring work was done on? If I'm wrong sorry, but thought it was your car.

The car doesn't need the ECU to turn over, your ignition is wired pretty much directly to your starter. No fuel will be injected though so it shouldn't ever actually start.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
I would agree with PJ, sounds like you need to FINISH installing and check, or replace the engine harness. if that is VERIFIED correct, I would write entire back to stock, and start from fresh.....you can probably leave the injectors in, and just change the constant on the stock file to start tuning.....but just start from scratch.
If it doesnt run, or flash correctly, you may need a new computer.
perhaps a flashing error locked it.
As stated above.
Get a whole new engine harness, install.
Plug in HPTUNERS and write-entire back to the stock flash.
Start from scratch....
Otherwise you'll be chasing your tail for months and months. No good.

Slowly but surely may some day win this race...
Shifted I didnt mean that it needed the computer to try and start the car. I just wanted to see if it was the pcm interpreting the command, and was the reason it was trying to start when I jumped the relay.
my next step is going to be to trace the short. it absolutly has to be a mechanical short. once I repair the short, Im going to drive it for a while as my daily driver. ill take it threw the paces and see if I can get anything else to happen. if the car starts to act normal again. and wont show any signs of being "twichty" im going to try and hook up with pj and give it another go.
PJ ill buy the roast beef this time.

instead of dickin around with repairing the wiring, why not hit up the local yard and pick up an unmolested harness therefor you know there wont be any issues.
my local yard doesnt have a single eco in it, let alone one that complys with my make/model.
and there mad expensive new.

Hey PJ, you said you forced the car in PE mode when you changed the temp to 256. Don't you mean you put the car into open loop so it would run on the ve table to tune cruise tables??? I had error on my gauges once when I was in the middle of a flash and I went to move and ripped the cable out of the laptop. So I un plugged the battery for about 10 minutes. Then turned everything on and flashed it again and it was fine..
