Wasted Spark???
Thursday, May 08, 2008 9:31 PM
A little back round first. I am an avionics tech with multi level intrests ( backyard tinkerer / inventor. I need to know if the ' 05 Cav has a waste spark.

More info? "With a 4 stroke engine, the crank rotates twice for every power stroke. The spark plug only needs to fire every 2nd time the the piston approaches t.d.c. This is not particularly convenient for engine manufacturers, so some generate a spark on every revolution". - This is called a "waste spark".

I really need the answer for this as it could lead to bodily harm or worse... NO JOKE!!!

In the ecotec's case I believe it is a Coil over plug setup and it is NOT a waste spark setup I could be wrong though.

Many GM's use this as a way to drive down costs. In fact every GM vehicle with the AC Delco coil packs that have the cyl numbering on them uses a waste spark system, batch firing the plugs on cylinders that fire opposing each other. (The opposite of firing mates) This would include the LN2, the 3X00 series of motors and several others. This simply causes a second spark event on the exhaust stroke of each cylinder and particularly in four cylinders every 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation.

Batch firing injectors are common too.
