swapping pcm's for tuning purposes.
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 7:49 PM
i'd like to buy hptuners, but i have a 96 sunfire which is not supported. how much work would be involved in switching over to a pcm from a 97. without being able to tune, my build will almost be pointless.

thanks

You need to climb under the car and take a look at your PCM.

If it has 3 plugs, then you will need to re-pin your harness, if it has 2 plugs then you just need to plug in a 97+ ECU.

well according to the wiring diagram i looked at on autozone, all the 96's are the same and have 6pins less than a 97.

you don't have to change out the entire vehicle harness? because i think there is a fuel tank sensor in a 97 that doesn't appear to be in a 96. it also seems that there is an ignition control module on the 97 and not on the 96

You are not listening. First check to see what ECU your car has (2 or 3 plug ECU). Then you can decide what needs to be done.

Is your car a 2.2 or a 2.4?

I think I said this in another post you psted in. Autozone's online wiring stuff is crap. Heck even the hanynes manual is not correct enough. We are telling you WHAT CAN BE DONE.

ok john i understand what can be done. and thanks for the info on autozone i didn't know they were no good. but yeah i know haynes sucks when it comes to wiring diagrams because i have a haynes service manual for my 2002 dodge stratus and i don't even want to talkabout how horrible the wiring looks

little bit off topic, but...

ill agree with auto zone/part source being crap, i asked for new fuel injectors for my car, and they told ME that my car doesn't HAVE fuel injectors.

i asked for spark plugs, and their books are updated to 1997... how pathetic.
