Worth the money

There is a local shop that would dyno tune my 2002 GM Supercharged Z24 for 500.00. Right now the only other mod I have is a K&N filter. The guy says he should be able to get me at least another 10-15 WHP and get rid of my top speed governor. He uses the HP tuner. The question I have is would I be better off spending the money on exhaust/ air intake or get the car tuned? If I get the exhaust/ air intake, pulley after the initial tune it costs only 75.00 to tune it again. Advice would be much appreciated.

Well those mods you listed to get, are all good mods for your set-up. Maybe get those mods and then get the tune later.

Thats what I was thinking but since it was only 75.00 to retune it later I was tying to figure out what would give me the most HP/$ ratio. A good tune or intake and exhaust. Also is this a decent price for a dyno tune? Thanks again.

Buy HPTuner and tune everything yourself... only $700 for the HPTuner and then you can tune it as many times as you want to..

I have never tuned an EFI car or know anybody that could coach me along. I would rather just spend the money to have someone tune it, than spend money and hurt my engine with ignorance.

Excellent advice for about 80-90% of the people on this board...

get your car tuned by someone else if thats one of his big selling points... governors should never be removed in my opinion. unless your car demands it for a competitive reason (hitting governor in 1/4 mi run for example), you will never need it removed. this guy is just setting himself up for a nice lawsuit one day...

anyways, now that my rants done...

getting tuned when stock is not a bad thing. i did it wit my stock 97 Z. only thing i had was a Short Ram intake. most of the driveability problems and quirks i didnt like about the car have been solved. being an automatic tranny, shift points were adjusted and such. the weird rough idle i had is smoothed out too.

now i have my exhaust done and may see about getting it tuned again come the warmer weather.

Well if you wanna spend $500 to have it TUNED ONCE instead of spending $200 more dollars so you can tune infinitely, then go ahead, a waste of money in my opinion..

Tuning is so easy, and to me, its fun, but if you just want someone else to work on your car instead of yourself, then go ahead and have him tune it, its just so easy that you shouldnt have someone else to do it for you.. and it wont damage your motor if you can follow instructions..

Actually once you have HPT you still need a wideband for fuel tuning. Even if you have that you can't get a good timing tune without a dyno, os in all $500 is not a bad deal, heard of better.

^^^^^ Although I'll agree it's not necessary... no matter how good of a tune you have, it is a VERY good idea to still have a wideband... especially with a boosted motor. It is better to catch any unexpected problems/mishaps before your entire motor is gone.

But yes, the best way to tune is on a dyno. So $500 from a reputable shop to dyno-tune really isn't that bad of a price.

i think you should wait to tune and save $75 down the road. you'll get pretty good gains out of an intake and full exhaust. and you car will sound better in the mean time. my 2cents.

Yea man definitely do the bolt ons first or else your first tune will be in vain when you bolt them on. Secondly with dyno time at about 100 bucks an hour I wouldn't advise on paying 700 buck for HPT then trying to teach yourself. That can get very expensive very quick. Don't get me wrong I think knowing HPT would be awesome for both of us but my pockets aren't that deep yet . 500 was just about what i'm guna be paying to get mine tuned also. Good luck!
