Hello my dad has a 1981 Corvette with a 383 Stroker. He had it dynoed and it came out with 285 HP and 343 FT/LBS torque at the rear wheels. Thats figured to be 350 HP at 400 FT/LBS at the flywheel.
The car feels very fast and when he raced my uncles 99 vette (dynoed at 336 hp and 336ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheels) he won from a 75 MPH roll to 110 MHP. How did my dad win with less power?
Is horsepower more important than Torque?

gear ratios.
your uncle cant drive.
one of those.

^^ What he said. The newer 'vettes are lighter and someone would have to be an awful driver or maybe he just wasn't flooring it. Whatever reason tell your dad to give me the '81 and he can pick up a '06 and re-race the uncle.

I like the talk about the '06.
What exactly is torque?

agreed ^^ cant wait to get my gears and i will have even more ^^
^^^ Never new gears acutally added torque.
they don't actually add torque in terms of engine, they add torque in terms of drivetrain output.... think about it, start your car from a stop in second gear, then try again in first, the gear ratio in first will make you pull alot harder then second, but at the time you rev out the gear fast, same thing with changing the rear gear.... it slike starting in 1/2 gear instead of 1st (obvisouly not a 1/2 gear just for example sake)
oh yeah and also thats why you dyno a car in 4th gear usually, because the gear ratio is 1:1 as close as possible to 1:1 because the output numbers won't be manipulated by the gear ratios (rear end gear will still be part of the equation but transmision gearing wont)
If your dad had a 383 LT1 in his 81 vette, I could see that happening.
...
he has a 383 ZZ4 with different cams and rockerarms edelbrock performer intake manifold and carburater. no computer. the ar was running lean on the dyno so he only took it to 5000 rpm when it redlines at 6000 rpm

ive seen 700 hp na 350s a 383 stroker smoking a newer vetter isnt all that hard to do.
a mild-med street 383 could easily make 425 hp running like 9.5:1 CR

how many speeds is the 81 vette? 5?
other cars, better cars?
4 speed manual

it wouldnt have made much of a difference 5 gear would just be cruising.
-Borsty
yes but his 4th is going to be taller to compensate correct?
other cars, better cars?
4th gear(in a manual) 90% of the time is a 1:1 ratio 5th would be something liek .75 or so
-Borsty
im not sure of how they geared them in 81 tho
other cars, better cars?
thats how it was thats wat im telling you silly boots.
i took a manual tranns class, fun stuff
-Borsty
i uderstand w/ 5th but that is how they would end it w/ a 4speed? 1:1
odd
other cars, better cars?
1:1 with a 4 speed yea

The car did 140 mph on the dyno, but i said they only ran it to 5000 rpm there is still another 1000 rpm to go.

my dad said he did 140 with his 78 trans am 4spd with 3.73 or 3.23 gears with a few more 100 rpm.
