Need help: 1986 Olds Cutlass Sup

K Step sister has a car... 1986 Olds Cutlass Supreme, auto, V8...

Reverse only works when the car has warmed up...

and now the car will not go into overdrive at all....

My guess would be that the tranny is going out... just wanted to check with some people that might know more....

The tranny fluid was low, but they put in more tranny fluid... still will not go into OD...

Tranny? Or could it be something else????

Drain the tranny fluid and change the filter. My guess is it still has the 1986 tranny fluid and filter in it.

Does the tranny fluid look burnt up?

How many miles are on the car?

Changing the tranny fluid and filter could have 2 effects -

1 - fixes the problem

2 - helps the tranny go out quicker (if this happens it was already on its way)

Also some tranny shops around here will do a free "transmission check" and tell you what they think is wrong with it. Call some local shops and ask them if they do it or know a shop that does.

Well the car has 150,000 miles on it... (which I guess ain't bad for an 86)...

I was thinking tranny too... but I'll give them all the info I can get so they can check up on stuff

my dad had a caprice that had no reverse, but od worked and it was a bad tranny. but he drove it anyways, just making sure he could find a spot to turn around. i had a k5 blazer and the tranny started slipping, so i changed fluid filter in it and worked as good as new, i also added 1 quart of lucas to it.
so if she cant drive it as is i would at least try to change the fluid and filter, but like tommyboy said there is a chance that it could go out.

new fuild is a shock to the trannys system if the fuild is indeed stock or far over the point where it should have been changed.

Its the trans on its way out. I had an 86 Cutlass Brougham just like it, with the 307 and the TH200C. It held out for 186,000 miles and by the time I sold it reverse was just about gone. Fluid and filter change just made it worse!

My advice- Just plop down some green to rebuild it, or grab a nice used tranny from the local pull-a-part. Or throw in an Olds 350 with Mondello parts and a built TH350 trans.

Oh, and good luck with it.

A 200r4 will slip right in, no prob. As will a TH350 with no driveshaft mods. The TH, make sure it's a BOP bellhousing.

Or, if you want to go a little more custom, Tremec T5 or T56 Clicky

My 200c died at 190k. As soon as I get the $$$ for the manual install, I have a 350 donor engine ready to go in.

One more thing, while not the most popular forum out there, check out oldspower.com. There may be more specifics as to what fits. Just don't ask how to swap a Chevy engine in...
