Anyone know about the bumpers on these cars?
Sunday, September 18, 2005 11:49 AM
Hey folks, I have a list of cars I was wondering if anyone knew a good deal about...

I'm looking to find out why these cars are not admissable into Canada (a friend wanted to import a Scion tC). If you can lend me some information regarding the bumpers, Side impact beams, head lights and whatever else is pertinent safety equipment, I would REALLY appreciate it.

2004+ Pontiac GTO
2003+ Mistubishi Evolution
2000 Toyota SC300/400
2005 Scion tC
2000+ Torota MR2 Spyder
2004 Golf R32

Basically, I'm figuring that these all have the 2.5 mph front and rear bumpers, and therefore, they're not up to the 8kmh (or about 5mph) standard Canada uses. I've looked a little, and the GTO has the 2.5 mph bumpers, but I'm not sure about the others.

A little help would be very much appreciated here! Thanks in advance!

Yeah, there is a possibility of that, but there isn't an equivalent model that I can get the bumpers from. I've looked for the alternates, and I had settled on doing it with a set of impala Bumpers, but I was told it still wouldn't be up to snuff... I'm just wondering if there's any information about the supplimental stuff, because I don't know if the listed models (other than the MR2 that is) have the LATCH system or equivalent for the rear seats, and other items.

To give the back ground, I've heard about a couple in Nova Scotia that HAVE a GTO, and a gent in Mississauga Ont. that have an EVO VIII, but beyond that, I don't know their circumstances (ie. manufacturer plates etc.). I figure, if the couple in NS can own a new GTO that's licensed in Canada, why the hell can't I? I'm not sure if they're snowbirds and just got the GTO for their home down south. I'm pretty sure the EVO VIII is a Mitsubishi manufacturer's car that's here "Temporarily," or for cold weather testing.

Well, the thing that is really making me wonder is that a lot of the really cool cars from Japan and Europe are made stock with a 5mph bumper... The thing that excludes MOST of them is that they have non-spec Headlamps (usually too much glare from Japan, or too low to the ground from Germany, but they have glare issues too), Child restraint systems that are not to spec, or the side-impact beams that are not to standard.

Usually, the glare issue can be fixed with a $3 shade, but the $12,000 in testing is what causes the back ups... the bumpers can be converted, but you need at least 7 models of the car to conduct testing, the child restraints can be retrofitted, or, the manufacturer can remove them altogether and apply for an exemption, and any emissions problems are usually fixed easily with an EGR/Cat Conv. retrofit.

I just don't get why Transport Canada is not updating to the 2.5 mph exemption. At least, the people I've talked to have no bloody clue.

I also ask because one of the Supt.s in the force and I got to talking about service vehicles, and apparently the RCMP was batting around an idea to approach GM/Ford and find out if there was a way to build a Mustang/GTO for highway patrol duties. We're talking 1-2 per highway unit, so about 40 cars total, and new purchase every 3 years. They were also looking at the CTS-V, but I doubt that'll fly because of price considerations. GTO/Mustang would be good because of the V8, good trans... etc. and any apprehensions or prisoner transports would be handled by a radio cruiser.

Anyhow... That's out the door if the units can't be certified by Transport Canada.

And, that shoots my chance to buy a retired unit on the cheap, right in the ass.

what are the monaros bumpers rated at?

That's a good Q. I've been looking for it, but the most I've been able to find is that there was not much done to the front-impact members on the Monaro, so I'm guessing it's a 2.5 mph bumper.

I don't know... I didn't know Monaros were sold in Europe. Depending, I think that they're sold in Britain (which has mediocre bumper regs), and not in Germany (which has very stringent regs). I know that there are a lot of cars that are Japanese/British/French/American that can't be sold in Germany, but they are sold in other countries, and just driven in. TUV tends to sort them out in a hurry.

If it's a vauxhall, then that would explain it, Vauxhall is a British brand right?

If it's not, I'll look into the chassis mods, but I don't think I'm going to make any headway. I think I'm just going to have to wait for another 13 years.
