Has anybody heard about this!!!
Sunday, September 11, 2005 2:36 PM
After talking to one of car buddy's, i was informed that because of GM's financial crisis, that they would be droping another line of cars to follow Oldsmobile. Next to go could be either pontiac or buick.... I can't imagine. I think GM should focus on build quality instead of pumping out rebagded vehicles left and right. It's killing GM, customer interest, resale values, build quality and profit. Gm is under the gun..... and oversea car company's are ass rapping them. Imagine a world without GM.... it could happen.. What does everybody think..

eh, this has been runnin around for quite a while. this was big news before GM put out their redesigned lineups. they're trying to make it so they dont have to cut another brand.

GM's finances are still up in the air, but the new Employee pricing incentive as well as upgraded build quality (if you've driven them between 1995 and now) is propping up their reputation.

Well, if ANYTHING should have to go (not that it will), I would say Buick. Cheverolet will always be there, it's the bread and butter of GM, Caddy is the luxury staple and with recent new models, reaffirming itsself as the standard of the world again, GMC is successful as the semi-lux truck brand, and Hummer will continue to do well until people come to their senses and quit buying so many SUV's. And simply put, both Saturn and Pontiac are in the midst of a HUGE overhaul with an onslaught of new car models. It wouldn't make sense to can either one of these with the time and money already invested in them.

Let's face it, when GM canned Oldsmobile, it was a lame duck anyways. Combined with lackluster sales, a hollow brand image, and the fact that Olds had nothing you couldn't buy as a Chevy, Pontiac, or GMC, it's days were numbered. Of all the brands that GM has, Olds was in the worst of situations and it was much easier for GM to cut it's losses and focus on the other brands. Had Caddy not needed a major overhaul, Olds might have been given the funds to reinvent and revitalize it'sself.

Cadillac was already overhauling it's image when Olds got cut.

I agree with the rest of what you have to Say Roofy, Olds was definitely the 5th wheel in GM... How they let the brand image decline like that, I don't know.

Way back in '02 when I was working at a Pontiac/GMC/Olds/Buick/Cadillac dealership, the talk around the water cooler was that buick would get the axe after olds. Thats back when nobody belived oldsmobile would actually get cut. So, MAYBE thats what will happen, but sometimes you just don't know. Times change and so do plans.

Discontinuing Buick would not be a good move as the largest group (baby-boomer) will be retiring soon and they will need a fart mobile and since Buick caters to the seniors, now is the best time to keep Buick.

Something should be done with GMC. IMO GMC should be doing med & heavy duty trucks and commercial vehicles and not just rebadged Chevy trucks. Maybe for once the name "Silverado" will be best seller as the Sierra buyer only choice to own a GM full-size truck will be Silverado.

I drop Saturn before Buick but thats just me.

GM would go belly up before they cut Pontiac or Chevy.

I agree with Mr. Goodwrench on GMC.

The only reason it was so sad seeing oldsmobile go, is because that was the oldest GM company, they had been around forever.

Too bad their cars were nothing exciting, the Alero was the only decent thing, everything else (Bravada comes to mind) was just a rebadged vehicle off of another division.

the alero was too.

buick and pontiac wont be cut, old people and companies love buicks and GM wont kill their sporty division if they know whats good for them.

I think IMO that GM should definitly revamp their divisions ( they should thier own identity and not rebage stuff)

For example:

1. Chevy should be all around maker of cars, sport cars, suvs, truck and vans in FWD,RWD and AWD (hopfully in AWD for cars)

2.Pontiac should be sport cars only in rwd and maybe awd

3. Gmc should into med and heavy duty truck (as Mr. goodwrench said)

4.Satrun should be youth division (like Sion)

5.Caddy should as it in the department

Id also drop Saturn before Buick....Buick has some great cars, very luxurious...my neighbor owns two Buicks, and I love how they look, inside and out...

chevy and gmc won't get cut for obvious reasons

saturn won't get cut because they're popular with older people due to the plastic body panels, affordability, and relatively decent reliability. they're recently popular with younger people with the redline series going at the sport compacts. and they're good for family people because they're decent sized for kids and again, they're affordable.

pontiac won't get cut because--
GTO-middle age guys, sports car nuts
sunfire(not sure of future plans but its still around)-anyone under 30yo
grand prix/am-anyone with kids that can't afford a full size car
g6-brand new, too much money invested

gmc/chevy/pontiac/saturn outnumber buick 10-1 on the street. i dont see why anything would get cut before buick. caddy would be the only other one to cut had this discussion taken place 5 years ago before the revamp

1. ok thats kinda already it

2. thats retarded, u cant just sell sports cars, if they did that then they would be cut, u need FWD cars and such to sell to keep the name going

3. GMC should just die off

4. i suppose.

5.HUH?

i agree the gmc should be cut. they offer nothing that chevy doesn't offer. either gmc needs to die off, or chevy needs to give the truck division to gmc...that way GM could be at the top of the best truck sellers instead of splitting the sales and losing to ford every year.
