Must be a manual and would prefer to have awd or 4wd. I understand that is hard to find in a price range under 1500. I just need a car to get me through the winter as well as somethin I can learn to drive a stick in. As long as it has decent heat and can pass inspection for one year its fine with me. I feel like the damage I'd do to my car in one winter would make it about worth while to buy a beater for a few months then sell it again or keep it till the next winter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
early-mid 80's toyota 4x4 truck. the choice is simple.
96 2.2 5speed
**SOLD**
i was thinking about gettin a beater... but i dont think i could stay away from my GTP that long. but yeah, an early s-10. you'd have to put a whole lotta weight in the back, though.
Andy
it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.
ZZP XP cam, 1.6 rockers, 105# springs, speedbuilt FWI, 3.3" modular pulley, TOG headers,
3" exhaust, flomatched injectors
'97 GTP 14.06@100.6mph pre cam w/ 3.5" pulley, I/E
i would like to get something in that price range also, im looking for either s10blazer or s10pickup with 4.3 auto, i want mine to haul my quad and to use as a play/work type of truck, it shouldnt be to hard to find something decent for 1500 though, good luck!
Not to be a downer, but those cars are going to get like 20 mpg or less, especially in cold weather. Since you only need it to last a year, you can probably find a subaru loyal or very late model legacy for <1500$. For example:
Legacy wagon
Does it go faster?
I say screw the 4wd or AWD. Going to be hard to find one unless you get a 1g DSM (good luck on keeping that running) just get yourself a FWD. Dont be a moron and they handle great in the snow. I would recommend an early 90's cavalier. I had one for a while. Gas mileage was insanily good, handled great in the snow.
If your stuck on AWD as long as looks are an option the early 90's civic wagon came in AWD. There is a few on www.ef-honda.com for sale around that price. They are ugly as hell but AWD and good gas mileage.
Good point about the gas mileage. I won't be driving it that much but it would be nice to get around 20 miles to the gallon.
My friend reccommended an izuzu amigo, anyone know about those. I am leaning towards an early 90's legacy, even though an early impreza would be perfect, just don't see any that cheap.
Keep the suggestions coming, thanks for the help!
There was someone in my neighborhood selling an older Impreza for under $1000 with new tires. It was still driven daily too, always in a different spot when I'd take the dog for a walk. Maybe if you keep your eyes open you can find one that cheap in your area
Have you checked autotrader.com? I'm pretty sure that it would let you do a search just for cars under $1500 with AWD in a radius near your zip.
Jeep Cherokee. Who cares about gas when you can go damn near anywhere.
get a cavalier....they are good beaters
^^^ So true.
And for $1500 you can buy two 1st gens.
I dunno, if I can't get 4wd or awd i'd want something with some good ground clearance, so I'm not plowing snow around. Allthough a subaru is prob my best bet for a 4 banger awd. And the other preference is I dont really want to go under 100 horsepower.
there was a 94 cherokee on ebay in rochester ny with 174k on it for 1800 bucks. my roommate just bought one in PA 96 with 133k for 2600, so far no problems
women are like cars you have to test drive the new one before you trade in the old one
DUde its not like ur driving a sports car just drive ur car
Mikey, with your tickets, keep it under 60 horses. You should buy my fiero.

trecel 4wd wagon
2004 Nissan Maxima SE w/ Elite Pkg
2005 Infiniti G35 Coupe w/ Sport Pkg
an old scubie sedan
my friend had one
160k+ miles sold it for $800 i think
not the most hp
but if its a winter beater who cares about hp
Go to autotrader, do the "power search", leave everything how it is except put in your price. It will search ALL makes and models within your price range. I'd just do that then pick the best car outta that.
hmmm....2nd gen cavalier? J's make great beaters
