performance + automatic? wat car to buy?
Tuesday, September 06, 2005 5:08 PM
If you guys had to buy a car, and it had to be an automatic.... what would you get, keeping in mind you still want performance......and fuel economy. No RWD, no V8's...just 4 or 6cyl fwd.... something sporty......... I'm thinking a grand am coupe with the V6......
i also dont wanna spend too much. so a mid to late 90's model i guess.....

Grand Prix GTP. I'd get something with torque and less of a high RPM power band. Definately not a honda, lol.

Automatics completely suck with high-rpm, low-torque engines. So limit your options to either a large 4 cylinder or a V6.

Personally I'd go with a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP as the others said, they only come in auto, and they can be made very quick with some cheap mods

Yea good idea, I didn't think of that one.

Definitely a good choice considering fuel prices these days.

Plus, the 2.4 VVT is promising to be an engine with a lot of potential. I'm sure a few nice mods would make it a very fun ride, even with the auto

^^^^ honestly you might be right, i have been thinking this as well ^^^ 2.4 SC'd, that or a GAGT with the 3.1 or 3.4.... otherwise there is nothing really......avengers i really like the looks of, but are wildly slow. lol The GTP i'd have to pass on. not my taste..too big of a car.

my buddy told me he saw some 3.8sc's (with auto) run 13s
at the track with only a 3" exhaust, pulleys, and only a few
odd things. its a good (and affordable) fwd/auto choice

Personally, I'd look into the new Cobalt SS with the 2.4 as well. I'd also check out the new VWs when they come out with the 2.0t. Mitsubishi Eclipse with a V6 would be good to check out. But I think that at the top of my list (if you're looking for performance) would be the Hyundai Tiburon GT V6. My buddy has one, in auto, and it still is quick as all heck.

for performance, i'd NEVER get a FWD car...

if i were to get an automatic vehicle intended for performance, and if it were totally stock, i'd probably get something like an old fox body mustang or a camaro, with the intention of building the crap out of the motor(or swapping something else in).

...by the way, since i missed the whole "fuel economy" portion of your post...get anything with an LS1. anything. 30MPG says a lot.

True, but you usually get even better on a smaller car with either a 4 or 6 cylinder. And unfortunately, there aren't very many cars that I would call "performance" worthy in that catagory that are RWD. You are right, L, that RWD is the better layout for performance. I just can't think of anything short of a V8 (which I would never choose if fuel economy were important) that is RWD and not a dog.

Though now I'm wondering... Does anyone know what the fuel economy on a 350Z is? That's a V6 with some good numbers... Huh... I'll have to look into that....

LS1

and yes i read his post about no V8's but still LS1is the way to go..thier is no such thing as performance and fuel economy you pay for performance and upgrade all kinds of things if you got the money for performance your not worried about gas prices and millage......

GTP. that's what you want. i know, you said it's "too big", but they're not that big, and really it's the one of the best cars meeting your criteria. 14's stock, easy to upgrade, decent gas milage (unless you're heavily modded) doesnt look terrible, and can take on 2 feet of snow and keep goin. you should go drive one. even if you dont think you would like it, do it. it'll at least give you some comparison for whatever else you decide to get.

Last Generation Honda Prelude. a great car with fantastic build quality...plenty of fun and an auto-stick. I drove one and fell in love with it. It's not a RWD V-8 like everyone here....that obviously can't read.....has thrown in. But it's a great car with everything your describing. Try one you'll be happy with it.

93-95 tauras sho, they came in auto, styling is decent, not to big, and way better interior than any chevy in the same class. or a gtp as they are so easy to make fast.

i was thinkin sho, but the auto thing killed that idea. the manual sho's are the ones that shine.
