now let's start with the story. a bunch'a guys go up to a local BK every saturday night to hang out and talk. good times for all. and no, it's not one of the ricer parties. im talking 500 horse camaro's, cobras, and some fast fox bodies (no, i dont really fit in, but it's fun all the same).
so some'a the guys get quite compeditive with their cars, but one guy in general just HAS to have the fastest thing there. he did own a 500 horse '03 cobra, an '00 lightening, and a couple other cars. he recently purchased an '05 mustang. apperantly he didnt think it was quite fast enough (after being beat by the GP of one of the camaro guys up there). so he went and did some work to it.
now, he doesnt know much about cars, so he drove all the way to north carolina to get a vortech blower and a zex nitrouse kit put on. all in all he was pushing in 10 lbs of boost, had a 50 shot, and was pushing around 600 horse.
so, the week right after he had this done, he raced one of the tamer cobras up there, got beat, but not terribly. a car length or so. the rider in the car for that trip said the car was detonating so bad he could hear it over the cobra's exhaust. but the owner is too stuipd to understand.
so last weekend we talk him into running one of the meaner cobras. the go out, line up, and start at it. up around 50 or so, the cobra had about a half of a car to a car on the stang, then the '05 just shot up like CRAZY. then... BOOM! smoke, oil, and peices go everywhere. we werent sure of the ammount of damage that it had done, but we knew it was bad.
The next day a bunch of the guys went out to where it happaned, and found this on the road.
bad part is, the guy's not that upset. amazing what having lots of money does to a person.

That's why you don't waste your money on a stock GT...you spen the 33G's on a Cobra and with a couple cheap mods you're pushing nearly 600 ponies. The motor is built for it...Stock GT bottom end....boooom

yeah, any engine if not prepaired for boost will blow. the nitrouse wasnt even needed in this equation, but it added to the problem. a 9.5+:1 cr + boost without a cam, headers, intercooler, ect, is insane. it just doesnt work like that, and now he knows it. you've got to pay to play. weather it be paying the bucks to do it right, or payin the bucks to get it fixed because you didnt.

yeah, that would've helped, but if he had just done it right, everything would've been fine. it he had gotten headers and a cam, or decreased compression even by just using thicker head gaskets, he probably would'v lasted longer. and yes, he's already looking at places to get a built motor for it. he's thinking about an 04 cobra short block.

There are GT's running more than 10 psi with 75hp shots and are quite happy. The guy had detonation which would hammer any motor, built or not. Stupidity of the driver killed the motor....and it will kill every motor he touches.
im trying to figure out what was causing the detonation, now. just saw a video of the dyno run, and it was running fine. in fact, it was mean as hell. i dont know what happened between the initial tune and three weeks later when he blew it up. but it wasnt really "safe" to begin with. it put down around 440 hp off the bottle, and 528 or so on (i was misinformed by the owner, it was a 75 shot of nitrouse... shows how much he knows and pays attention). so before the boom boom, it was a mean a$$ car.

Easy....his tune wasn't safe for those power levels on the stock shortblock. Even a slight amount of detonation can be terminal in such cases. Detonation is caused by quite a few things...improper sparkplugs, too much timing, bad fuel. Especially with the 05's due to their unique sparkplugs there are no colder range plugs and it takes a special tool to gap them down. Difference between his dyno time and when it blew? Exactly that...dyno's don't place as much load on the engine as when the engine is actually pushing the vehicle's weight along with the driver's. More load = higher combustion temps = increased chance of detonation.
i was curious what the 05 internals looked like.....
dont mean to wake the dead with this (the thread, anyway) but i found the video of the dyno run at the shop where he it s/c'ed. his is the second car. the white one with red stripes. he puts down some pretty impressive numbers. enjoy.

10 psi and a 50 shot would never give that car 600 hp....a vortech supercharger will give a stock 05 gt , without tunning , 360 hp, with tunning about 400hp.....he probley wasnt tuned cuz , we just threw one on a guys at my friends shop and stock it was running really lean... after tunning we got about 400 out of it... and its a everyday car.
... did you see the vid? it's not 600, but it's sure as hell over 400 without the gas, and over 500 on it. and he lied to us, anyway. it was a 75 shot.
