I come to a fork in the road.
Monday, September 05, 2005 7:51 AM
As of now i have a 2.2 cavi with some mods. i planed on putting NX wet kit in in next. BUT i am now able to get a loan and buy a new car. i can take a a 5g loan out and go buy the "easy" way out a DSM which would be real sweet or i could tkae that 5g and boost the cavi and finsh what i started with the cavi. it is just so hard to decline a already boosted car. that can be real fast with proper mods. question is what do you think i should do?

I'll tell you right now if you get a 1g DSM you're always going to be putting money into it just to keep it running. They always have problems and little bugs. Yea they can be fast as hell though. Don't settle for anything but an AWD. Check out www.dsmtrader.com you can snag deals on them all the time.

I say boost the cav. In the long run it will be a lot more fun and reliable.

DSM and Reliable go together like Special Ed and Spelling B contest. Just dont do well together.

sooooo not true!!

i have run my new dsm into the ground! i have put AT least 50 passes at the track this summer, and 70-100 street races. and about 20 passes on a 100 shot. the ONLY problem i have had is a blown IC coupler. i change my oil every 1000 my timing belt every 30k because of the xtra stress i put on that thing. and warm up/ cool down the car every time a drive it. oh yea its daily driven also probably about 4-5 days a week. i know people have tons of problems with them, but its mostly idiots not treating them well. ive had 4 of them now, and no problems. oh i also just did a tranny swap a few weeks ago, not because it needed it but because i have a new built tranny in it. a turbo 2.2 cavi will have so many more problems than the dsm, unless the dsm has 600 hp.

oh and as for those problems on the $500 dsm, is it fwd or awd??
awd trannys can come for like $300, then send in that broken one to shep and have it built, costs alot, but launches like a mother @!#$....
it took me like 20 hours on my frist tranny swap last year, but that was swapping trannys from 2 cars so out of one into the other, then the same for the other car, had no clue what i was doing.
the one i just did took like 4 hours.
a window isnt bad, and an axle isnt anything either, i got a used axle for 60 bucks at the junk yard. and if its the front, just do it the same time you do the tranny, you have to pop it out anyway.
trust me if you take care of a dsm, you will LOVE it!

umm dont take a loan out to mod your car, cause when you crash your car, get sick of it, blow up the engine, ect ect, you still have to pay that loan....

If you just want the speed, convenience, and practicality of the turbo already being installed, DSM. If you want to be different from 99% of all cavs on the road, boost your current car.

from the dsm guys i know, RUN THE OTHER WAY. They're fast but the engine bay is a mess, a bitch to work on, and needs constant attention. This isn't from my personal experience, but from experiences of people i know who have a pretty good clue what they're doing... If you can get a loan and get a new/er car why not something better than a mitsu? You can get a used GTP for around $5K these days, and $2K in mods will get you pretty far. Or a used SRT4 or WRX. Or hell, get a festiva and swap in a B6T from a capri XR2, and run 13's right off the bat for less than $2500... There are lots more reliable, an inexpensive ways to get performance.

If you're gonna go dsm a newer one in good shape will treat you well but most of the 1g's-early 2g's have been to hell and back.

If you have the time and/or knowledge to do your own work then there quite cheap to maintain even when you break stuff. However, its all relative, boost your cavi up to 300-550hp by just throwing on a bigger turbo and more fuel and pieces of your block will be laying on the pavement.

Lets put it this way, spending money on cars is a waste that you will never see back. Don't take out a loan. My issue with the cavalier is that even if you put 10 grand in it FWD will make it pointless when you start getting real power. Even a slightly boosted cavi would have a sweet sleeper effect though. How far will 5 k take a 2.2 anyway, will you have to build up the engine for boost cause 5k can go fast.

Loans for mods are a bad move. Save you money.

ive found them pretty easy to work on.. and you have to put in work to be fast, id rather put in time working on my car, getting to know it, than time earning money for a @!#$ load of parts to barely run 13's....
