Cobalt SS S/C or Cobalt SS non S/C

Well, hear lately i have really been thinking about getting rid of the cavy and getting a new Cobalt, seems liek a really hice ride for the money and wwell the factory S/C helps things also.

I noticed that for 2006 they are coming out with another SS model, this one will have the 2.4 ecotec making 171 HP @6200 and like 163 TQ i believe and its N/A of course, it has simiar styling to the SS S/C and is a about 3 grand cheaper.

Now i was thinking this would be the one to buy abd do a turbo on, would make some sick power at low boost numbers, and would be smoking SS S/C's all day long, even once the general realeases the stge 1 & 2 kits.

Or just pop for the bad boy and buy the SS S/C and have fun with the blower, with the factory upgrades it promises to be a 13's second ride, and you can get the performance package with the LSD and Recaro seats. But with all that the price jumps to around 24-25 grand wth what i have been seeing sitting on dealer lots, becaue they have pretty much all the options.

Anyway im not sure which one would be a better buy as far as performance goes, with whats available for the eco now that would most likely work on the 2.4 eco that has VVT or the factory hot rod.

Im thinking for the price differance, the SS S/C will probably be my choice, that way you get some great performance out of the box and dont feel the need to fiddle with it right away.

Let me know what some of you think about this.

i say go for it. run a turbo setup with at 5-6 psi. you should be hittin the same numbers as an SS. who knows GM might make a s/c for that engine.

Get an SS supercharged! I love mine to death! Check out some of the CobaltSS sites for dynos cause the average SS makes 210-215 at the wheels. Yes GM underrated the SS's hp #'s.

Modds:
GM Stage 2 with SFPHQ 2.8 pulley
Injen Intake
GM Dual Pass Aftercooler w15psi Surge Tank
GMPP Exhaust Manifold
CTi 3" Downpipe and Cat
Custom 3" Cat Back with Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler
ZZ Engine Mount
ZZ Front Trans Mount
B&M Shifter
NGK BKR7E Plugs
DC Strut Tower Brace

Soon to be installed:
2.6 pulley, Siemens 60lbs Injectors, NGK 2 Step Colder Plugs
Tune Time Custom Dyno Tune

Exactly. The SS S/C is almost impossible to beat in the performance per dollar equation. The SS seems like its going to be competitive as well, but for only a few grand more you can have all the exterior and interior features of the SS S/C, plus the Supercharged Ecotec, all under warranty.

Of course if your the type of person that likes to do serious work on their car themselves, then perhaps a 2.4 SS paired with an aftermarket turbo kit would fit the bill.

Its really more a matter of preference - the SS S/C is the factory performer, while the SS has the potential of serious mods (like a turbo or S/C) from the aftermarket

gm rated the powwer on 87 octane , thats why the low #s

personally ive driven both , and the 2.4 ss i liked more

granted the s/c will be the 2.4 but i think give some boost the 2.4 will kill the 2.0 sc

Well, I don't know if you knew this but....

The Cobalt SS with the supercharger comes with a supercharger,
and the Cobalt SS without the supercharger doesn't come with a supercharger.

Not alot of people know this, so you can think me later, and try not to tell too many people, GM might lose profit over this tidbit.

the 2.4 is using a sort of v-tec system on it...seems like a good design..but i wouldnt want to have one of the first year of production

Sort of v-tec system and GM. two things that should never be used in the same sentence.

its not a v-tech , the v-tech switches ove to a high performance cam lobe

the eco does not do that

the vvt adjusts the cam timing , on both int and exh cams

like you do with adj cam gears

I guess you you are talking about the S/Ced version. So I have to ask where did you get that from? As in can you show me some legit GM official release that says that "205HP on 87 octane."
And please don't give me dyno sheets as those can be manipulated for bragging rights as I know all the tricks already. I was not born yesterday nor am I gullible.

Get the 2.4 and turbo it.

2.4L boosted > 2.0L blown

It's well known that the SS S/C puts down between 205-210HP at the front wheels. The lowest dyno posted was 197WHP. GM underrated the car just like they did with the F-bodies, don't kid yourself.

Those pulls were of course using Premium fuel. I'm sure the numbers would probably be somewhere in the 180WHP range in regular 87 octane gas, since the ECU adjusts the timing and lowers boost to prevent knocking.

Buy the regular SS and boost it with a turbo with the price difference. Then get the a-arms and such from the SC version after some rookie kid crashes his and it's in a junkyard.

I love mine for the interior, sterio, etc. But I also plan on ditching the supercharger eventually for a turbo, although that's a least a yr and a half away, I just bought I house im broke! LOL

Im surprised at GM's pricing however. I got mine for 19,600. (granted I have a non lsd, no sunroof, no xm radio coupe). Stickers on the SS's non SC are still 21 something at dealers? Even with GMS pricing I would have to assume that is still near 18k or more. I would shop around.

But I would assume you would get a better deal locating a non SC SS coupe for a good price, and let your mods go from there with your extra cash.

Both cars are great, yeah the sc is faster and looks better, but if you get a good enough deal on a standard SS the extra money you'd have could result in something better. Just a thought............

id say it was probably on 91 octane

since the 2.2 eco in the cavalier was even tested w/ 91 octane
