I am interested in purchasing a 2002 WRX with an automatic trans. How are these things with the auto, are they a lot slower or not? I am not interested in making this a race car or nuthing, just gonna keep it stock and use it for a daily driver. I Like the awd for these canada winters.
go get it abd bo problem in reliability. They are not that slow and holds more hp than 2002 manual tranny. but if u are getting a manual tranny make sure u buy 2003 and up which are better transmision.

While its still has some go to it, there is still a substantial difference between the two. The manual is much easier and usable in terms of keeping it in the right rpm ranges.
Its only a 4 spd auto and the turbo lag is even more aparent than on the manual.
That being said, i doubt you'll have any reliability issues as long as its in good shape. Its a fun car for sure, but if you are debating the manual, you are better off getting it, rather than kicking yourself later.
I say get the manual. You may not want to mod it now, but once you get that sucker the mod bug will be all over you. You wont be able to wait for a turbo timer, BOV, electronic boost controller, exhaust....you get the point.
I think it would be just too hard not to mod a WRX, lol. However, if you're stuck on the auto like said above. There will be a difference. As with any turbo 4cyl its better at the higher RPM's. The auto doesn't really keep it where you need it.

i agree. you may think its ok now but your going to really wish you bought a manual later on.
slow as balls in an auto... turbo lag is way more apparant. Ive driven both... i mean the auto pulls but the manual is better. Its also funner.

Yea I agree with the others, definitely get the manual. If you get the auto, you'll end up regretting it down the road.
Not only is the manual much more fun to drive and significantly quicker, but its the way to go if you ever decide to do some mods. The autos have some seriously bad turbo lag, which is made worse by the fact that its only a 4-speed.
The manual also gets better fuel mileage (important these days), especially when you just shift low and keep it out of the boost
Hold off on the purchase, and see if you can find a nice example with a 5-speed instead

basically i want this car for its awd and not the performance aspect of it. I need awd but dont want a truck. i drove manual for a couple yaers and just get sick of always @!#$fing.
If all you care about is the AWD, and aren't looking to mod it, why even get a WRX? Why not get a regular Impreza, or an Outback? You'd save yourself a lot of money by not paying such a bigger premium to get a WRX, a premium you sound like you won't really exploit anyways.

Agreed. The Impreza 2.5 RS would be a good way to go. You get the AWD, don't have to deal with the insurance of the turbo, and you get something that looks just like a WRX minus the ugly hood scoop. Plus, you'll be naturally aspirated with a larger displacement which is the better way to go for an automatic. I, too, prefer automatics for daily drivers, and this would be the car I'd go for if I were looking for a compact with AWD.
