Hey everyone. Well I finally found a job so a new car is likely to follow shortly. I'm trying to decide on which car I want to buy. So I thought I would turn to you all for opinions
I really like the Scion TC, and it has been the front runner in my mind for a while. However, I realize that my living costs may be higher than I anticipated earlier on, so I've been contemplating going with something else that would be cheaper, at least until I could get situated.
I wouldn't go with anything beyond a 2002, and I refuse to buy a Chevy or a ford. I'm not really feeling anything Chrysler/dodge either.
So, I would like to get your opinions on what cars under $17K that you would consider buying. I'm looking for a nice combination of reliability, looks, fuel efficiency and roominess (hence why I'm liking the TC more and more).
for a little extra green a solistice is sweet.

no extra green availiable... and I should have said GM, not just Chevy
i.e... I dont want to have a car's value fall faster than a pair of undies at prom when I drive it off the lot
cavalier! hahahahahaha
get a truck, best resale.

I'm looking for a car really... not wanting a truck, not liking many SUV's, and I sure as hell am not going for a minivan.
I was just looking at some used cars around 15,000 because I deploy in January. All my extra money is going to pay my truck off. Once that is done i'll be picking me up a nice car.
So my point is, I was just looking and I found a bunch of nice used cars for around 15,000.
Used SRT-4
WRX (found a couple for 15k, its a little harder but you can find them)
Celica GT and a few GTS 6-speeds
Civics
Tiburons
I'm sure I there is a bunch more but thats just what I was searching for and found.
You can get a tC for right around 17K. Id rather have a new tC than a Used nearly anything. Very nice car for the money
wait a year, get a GTO. Hopefully I will be getting ine around then, hehe.

save up for the tC you won't regret it
if you're looking to buy a car right now though, in all honesty I'd suggest the Corolla. best gas milage, room, quality, etc for the price, on top of that, Toyota's been making superchargers for it recently. can't say I've kept up with that info though.
The TC is definately my favorite right now. The only thing I don't like is that I may have to go with a 60month loan to get the payments where I want them.
The other cars (used, probably 2-3 years old so I don't catch the depreciation) I've been looking at are the Tiburon, Mazda3, or an Eclipse. I like the Celicas, but last time I checked for insurance on them, it was pretty damn high. Also considered an SRT-4, but I have a hard time looking at them (never was a fan of neons
).
KIA RIO.

Trust me, I'm not buying GM until they can get their @!#$ straight with pricing. Every year they tack on additional rebates and it drive the value of used cars down into the ground. Yes this means I can buy a used one cheap, but screw that. Buying this cavalier was a mistake considering a I could have picked up a 94 civic for slightly cheaper and right now it would be worth $2500 more.
And if I was going with a hybrid, I'd get a civic hybrid. I couldn't see myself in a prius or Insight. Ugh... the thought just causes me to cringe.
hybrids arent that great, get a diesal, biodiesal is the wave of the future.

tC gets like 30 on the highway
I have, hence why I'm looking at Scion. Toyota's reliability, but looks decent, and I wont be raped on insurance unlike a Celica. It also still gets an average of 25 miles to the gallon...
But also, if you check the prices on some of the Hybrid cars, their initial cost is quite a bit higher than their non-hybrid counterparts. I don't plan to put more than 12K miles on the car per year either.
So if I have 2 cars, one with 25 miles to the gallon, and one with 45 miles to the gallon. I drive 12,000 miles in a year, Car 1 will need 480 gallons of gas and Car 2 will need 267 gallons. That's 213 more miles per gallon. Let's say the average gas price over the next 3 years is $4.50. I'll be paying (213x3) x $4.00 = $2,875 less in gas over the 3 year period, but the cost of the Civic Hybrid over the Civic LX is over $4,000 more. On top of that, the $4000 is going to be accruing interest since it will be on a loan. Digging back to my finance classes, I calculated the additional interest expense for the hybrid is going to be approximately $670 over 3 years with a 60month loan. So now the the hybrid is truely costing me [( 4000 - 2875 ) + 670 = ] $ 1,795
more!!!
While I do agree it's safer to pay more now instead of dealing with variable gas prices, I also believe the gas price increases will come down eventually, and I don't think they are going to get high enough to overcome the additional cost of the Hybrid. Gas would have to get up to $7.31 to break even with the addiotional cost of the Hybrid.
Wow that was alot of math.
id get a 02 1.8 turbo jetta...great power, great resale, moon roof, heated leather or cloth seats...i think excelent build quality , seems they last a long time
96 cavi'/WI j's
I got 35 mpg with my Ion, that's with the a/c on all the time as well..
Red 2005 Saturn Ion-3 Coupe
Personally I would go with a Hyundai Accent. HUGE gas mileage. Mine when I had it got around 38 highway (even though Hyundai rates it at 33mpg hwy) and I would fill up every 2 to 3 weeks - literally. When I did, it didn't take much to fill the 12 gallon tank. AND the money you save (you can get them for around $10-11,000 brand new with 10 year warranty) can go towards gas or other items. I loved that car and wished I never got rid of it. never traveled so much in my life on so little gas (besides my moped when I was 12). Check out this link:

I decided I need one of these, wonder what kinda of mpg it gets?

bah... that still costs more tha 18K
As for an Ion... enjoy it... I wont be
The Accent is nice for gas milage, but I really am looking to move up from the Cavalier... not move laterally. I figure it's a new beginning in my life, so I should enjoy a new beginning with a car. I don't really have any other vices other than Jagermeister, so my new car can be my vice
