? on SC on a Gran Prix GTP
Thursday, August 25, 2005 6:33 PM
My buddy wanted me to post this for him.

His supercharger all of the sudden is making a louder than usual high pitched whining sound ( I know i am going to get flamed for this but you would have to hear it. it doesn't sound like a typical blower, kinda like a Boeing reving up. lol kinda crude but wtf...).
Anyway it does this all the time while the pedal is pressed. It just started happening and he has 20000 miles on it. I don't know much about SC's but he says it is a Eaton M90 charger. I told him to take it in and change the oil in the sc but that is all i can think of.

any help is greatly appreciated.

20000 miles should still be under factory warranty, just take it to the dealership.

has he done anything to the car yet? intakes and throttle body adjustments can change blower sounds. are you sure it's coming from the blower? does the sound change with rpm? like, pitch, intensity, that kinda stuff? on the blower snout towards the casing there's a plug with an allen head slot in it. open that up and look inside. if the s/c oil isnt right at the bottom of the fill hole, put more in, and take it to get looked at. i doubt it's a bearing problem. mine has 106k on it, and the bearings are fine. sorry, that was kinda a jumble of info and questions. get back if you learn more.

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

^^^ Yup what he said, check the supercharger oil first thing. To me it does sound like the supercharger coupler but that should be covered under warrenty so just get him to take it into the dealership.

If it is the coupler and it's under warranty all they're gonna do is change it for another one of the same and he'll have the same problem in about a year. The one ZZperformance sells is 10x better. But it's under warranty and iunno if he wants to void it.

well i know that putting an intake on a s/c will make it whine a lot louder so if he did that it could be that, unless you can tell its not a normal noise, youd have to explain better, ask on ilgpc.com they know a lot about gtps over there

eh, i doubt it's the coupler. the coupler is usually a rattling noise, often said to sound like "rocks rolling around", which is a very accurate description. is it a whining, whistling, or like, shrill scratching noise? only thing i can think of is it's got to be some constant friction as it rotates. possibly something got into the blower and scratched one of the rotors, and now it's just tearing a streak through the case? really, i'd have to get a better descrption of it. you could also ask the guys on clubgp.com. they know everything and all.

whining is usually low S/C oil... IF all the stock intake plumbing is intact.

i had a similar noise in mine in my old 99 GTP i found out it was the bearing or bushing for the output shaft.. had my cousin replace it one day when he was bored.

but i had the same noise a few weeks before that and it was low oil in the s/c according to my cousin... so he added oil and it went away till the other thing i mentioned above.

well i wish your buddy luck with with what ever it is.
