Focus SE

What do you guys think of these? they seem really affordable for one thats just a few years old. I'm looking at one maybe in the next year, to replace what i've got without spending too much. But in turn getting a car 5 yrs newer with 1/2 the mileage.

I'm after a 4 door model with the 2.0 SPI 110hp engine not the zetec and with a 5 speed.

They look to be proven cars with great gas mileage.

Honestly, if just for economy car it'd be okay. But MY personal idea *YAWN* to the car in general.

They're not bad. I just helped a co-worker buy a new 05 Focus ZX3 SE. With all rebates, etc it came to like 12,800 and change.

Good mileage, handling, and there is an aftermarket for them. Not my cup of tea, but a good reliable little car for cheap.

Why would you even consider the ancient 2.0 SPI?? That motor is a piece of trash, and extremely underpowered at best. A 2800lb vehicle with 110HP and a crappy automatic is not my idea of bargain, no matter what the price.

Do yourself a favor and find a Focus with a Zetec and a 5-speed or even an auto. The manuals get awesome gas mileage (like in the low 30's) and have plenty of pep. Even the automatic versions are tolerable in terms of power, yet still get decent fuel economy.

Going from an 2.0 SPI auto to a Zetec manual is like going from a 2200 auto to a 5-speed Ecotec

I have to concur with the Zetec thing. My g/f has an 03 ZTS sedan and it is significantly more peppy than another friends regular SE sedan.

Moral of the story:

You will likely regret getting the 2.0 SPI.

If you cant get a focus with the zetec motor, look for an '02 cav or sunfire sedan instead. Why? The majority of them came with the ecotec standard. You'll be getting more power with about the same gas mileage, and probably for cheap.

Depending on how much you want to spend. I just bought my new 2005 se for about $9500 after rebates. Now is a good time to buy. I would get the Duratec over both the zetec or the spi. THe duratec is a better engine and has more usable torque. They also have more power compared to the zetec engine. Plus it is used in many cars meaning there is great product support available.

the SPI 5 speed isnt much of a dog at all. the automatic is, i used to work at a ford dealership, and the SPI is not a peice of trash engine, lol. HP wise its no screamer but these engines last.

yup. my escort is a 2.0 5 spd. gets great gas milage, and is pretty quick, (for an escort lmao). i'd say go for it w/ the focus. my girlfriend has one, she loves it, my sister in law has one, she loves hers as well, im thinking of trading in the escort and getting a focus some time myself. nice cheap little cars lol
