Here's a quote ...
"Overall, buyers of domestic-brand vehicles tend to be older, less educated and less wealthy than owners of import brands. Over the past 10 years, the gap in income and education has widened, with the most desirable customers flocking to foreign brands.
"The income is a worrying sign," said David Ensing, director of automotive research at St. Louis-based Maritz Inc. "If you're not keeping up with other manufacturers, it probably means some of your more profitable customers are going away."

Well someone has officially said it ... domestic buyers are generally older, less educated, and less wealthy than import brand owners.
Agree with it or not ... these market demographics and trends are VERY disturbing to the Big 3 .... and things really don't seem to be getting better for the Big 3 in the future, unless some big changes occur with domestic cars.

I would also think that domestic buyers tend to also buy cars by emotions and by Nationality pride as well.

I would argue this is due to the "less educated" factor.

i dont think they mean just econo cars their talking about the whole spectrum of vehicles, mid size and large cars included. like nissan maximas, honda accords, toyota solaras, plus any acuras, lexus infiniti, audi. to be honest i dont think the big 3 really compare quality wise with the imports. its kinda sad.
Don't steal, the government doesn't like competition
hmm
well if they were so educated couldn't they see that honda is over rating their cars
and well they just aren't all the great
imports blow dick.

i agree completely. The Big 3 are getting way more complaints per vehicle compared to import companies such as nissan and honda. I think people stick with buying U.S vehicles because they feel they are supporting The U.S economy. But if you look at it dosent pontiac build the gtos in Australia. And most american cars are starting to use foreign parts anyways.

well i can pass for a redneck.... i got ya back playa!
I just prefer the look of some of the domestic cars. I know imports are probably more comfortable and all that razz, but I'm not buying a car for comfort. Don't get me wrong, but all but 1 car in the family is domestic. Mainly because my parents prefer "sportier" cars and there are no import dealerships around here.

Just call the guy driving the Escalade that he's poor and stupid.. Whatever.. I think the article itself is stupid. I bought the domestic after test driving the imports. I like the low end torque that domestics have, and the price was right as well.

Why is it that when import is mentioned...Honda seems to be the assumed brand?
I am thinking Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche when I think higher priced imports. It seems to be reflected in the cars I see every day.
When you think that GM's top of the line bling ride is a fraction of the price of a flagship whatever German import, there is no surprise wealthier people are not driving the "discount" luxury car that domestic makers build.
Well i guess i must be uneducated because rather than buy an import i bought a domestice when i came out of college. Also because my car has treated me well why should i buy another to do into debt. I guess i should buy a $50,000 dollar BMW to show i am educated. I think not i am spending my $50K on an extention on our house that will raise our home value even more. Out house is worth about $80K more that we bought it for. I really must be stupid.
Also shows any rich idiot can buy an import. (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, etc..)
