i just test drove the SS coupe 2.4 5spd today , and i gotta say im more impressed with the 2.4 vvt than the 2.0 s/c
i know the ss s/c has the fe5 or fe7 , i forget what the designation was for it , and the ss has the fe3 , i personally like the way the car rode , and was alot more impressed with the the 2.4 ss , than the 2.0 s/c
the only bad thing i didnt like about the ss was the size tire they chose for the 17x7 rims , the 205/50/17's look like dam low rider tires , the rim is wider than the tire itself
it need a 225/45 or maybe a 245/40 on it
if i didnt have a proto type gm s/c to put on my 00 2.4 cav , ida been seriously thinking of trading it in on the 2.4 ss
i cant wait to see some 1/4 times from the 2.4
Yeah i need to head up and test drive one. You didn't happen to see the sticker on it did ya?
2006 Cobalt SS 2.4L 9.6 @74mph 1/8th mile w/2.28 60ft
only thing i dont like about the 2.4 SS is the body isnt aggressive enough. Other than that im really starting to like sedans more and more.

My local dealer has alot of them, but I've yet to drive one. How does the power delivery feel? I know it was a test drive and all but I would think that the upper rpm range would be where that motor would shine. I agree however about the SS coupe not being aggressive enough, you could tell in my last post comparing the two cars.
I am glad they gave it a smaller wing however!!
the 1 i drove was just over 19 , but it was like the base model ss , had the mp3 and that was about it , lol
i think the base SS looks good , they shoulda done the same rear bumpers , but i can see 2.4 owners doing the S/C stuff , and the s/c people doing the same switch , to try to confuse people , lol
i got rubber in 3rd pretty easy , and i wasnt really trying
i was most suprised how different the car handled , to me the base ss felt alot more fun to drive
odd tire size... but dont throw a fatter tire on it.
a 205 stretched on a 7" rim is perfect. good feel and response.
What was the price on the SS? And this was a coupe not the sedan right?
2006 Cobalt SS 2.4L 9.6 @74mph 1/8th mile w/2.28 60ft
how did it feel? was the gearing close like a honda engine with VVT? can you hear/feel it change over? and how is power before vtec engages?
glad theres a 5 speed out. wonder how easy it would be to swap one into a cavalier and just run an apex-i vtec controller? id assume it would bolt right in and everythign be fine except for the ecu part. with the whole electronic throttle control.
Hrmmm my unlce has a few 06's cobalts at his dealership so i'm gonna go up and look and see if there are any SS's 5 speed. If so i'll get pics and a review when i get back. I'm liking the SS more and more. Its nice to get a family discount

no feel for the cam changes , since it is constantly variable , unlike the vtech
and it was a coupe , the sedan they had was closer to 20k cause it was a auto matic
and i said 19k for the ss coupe i drove

constantly variable??? can u explain? how is the gearing? is it really close like honda vvt engines or can u actually drive and keep the rpms under 3k in 5th gear?
engine changes cam angle's to get more power with less effort i beleave it's more like the svt focus motor then honda v tech

honda's single stage vtec is a little old compared to today's technology. even honda now uses a variable system on the k-series engines.
instead of two power peaks (from both cam profiles, on b/d series honda I4's), you just have a large amount of power for most of the entire rev range.
i can't remember where i read it, but i thought i seen that engine has 80% of it's max torque avalible by 1800rpm. correct me if i'm wrong.

im not that fimialr with the newer hondas and their i-vtech or what ever it is
easiest way to put it on the cobalt is you never know its working , cause you cant tell
the gearing is pretty much the standard eco 5spd gearing , with a 3:91 final drive
im looking for a "new" car, but the SS is way out of my price range. I guess I will have to do with 2.2 eco with the hope that some day I could swap motors.

^^^^I know what ya mean. I'm hoping to get a nice discount from my uncle as he always helps us out. He took off 10K off of my dads 2500HD. So i figure i should be able to get an SS w/ leather and sunroof 5 speed for 15-16K. Or so i hope
2006 Cobalt SS 2.4L 9.6 @74mph 1/8th mile w/2.28 60ft
hmm as soon as i see one i plan on taking it out, ive driven an ss s/c before, so ill also be able to compare
Remember, we are talking about two different technologies here - variable valve timing, and variable lift. Systems like vtec or vvtli combine the two. The "switch" or bump in power you see on a vtec engine is when it switches the the higher valve lift profile. The 2.4L only uses variable timing, not lift. This is not unlike many other engines on the market these days - the GM truck I6 engine (and its new I4 and I5 variations), Toyota's VVTi - the base engine in Corolla and Celica.

so its more for economey where as early honda vtec engines before the K series, were used for a more aggressive profile to make power.
Not to Jack the Thread But I Heart My Ion Redline. I havent seen a regular SS yet, can someone post a good pic of it?
Thanks
<~~~~PWN3D!!
I test drove a SS 2.4 Auto and I wasn't that impressed....
My car felt faster, although the interior was a lot nicer in the Cobalt.
