2006 Cobalt SS vs. 2006 Toyota Corolla XRS

Anyone got some comparisons on these vehicles? I mean the Cobalt SS Sedan, not the s/c one. Anyways, my mom just got the XRS, and I was looking into that car for a while but something stopped me. And I'm looking into the Cobalt SS as my next vehicle, but I must admit, the XRS is very nice. I think it's a great improvement over the Corolla S. Anyone got any points that can help point me in the right direction? Other than "It's a Toyota, it will have a better re-sale". I'm looking for specs.

Cobalt SS Coupe:
2871 lbs
171 hp @ 6200 rpm
163 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm

Corolla XRS:
2670 lbs
164 hp @ 7600 rpm
125 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

Difference of 201 lbs.
Cobalt has 7 more hp, and it peaks 1400 rpm sooner
Cobalt has 38 lb-ft more torque, but it peaks 600 rpm later (although the Ecotec has a bit flatter torque curve, so at 4400 rpm the Cobalt has more torque then the Corolla).

I would say there probably is no clear winner here. Performance-wise the cars are extremely similar. As for me personally, what would bring me to chose one over the other would be the reason I was buying the car. If I wanted a nice reliable daily driver, I might choose the Corolla. On the other hand if I had ANY intention on modifying the engine (I speak specifically of boost, or other extreme mods), there would be absolutely no question - the Ecotec is the clear winner. The 1.8L VVTL-i is just too high strung to be able to handle more then a very minimal amount of boost. The Ecotec, in theory, could probably handle twice the boost.

I wonder... is the 1.8L in the corolla a detuned
version of the 1.8L found in the Celica GTS ??
they both sound like great options... I suppose
that the corolla might be a better choice if you
were looking for a better resale price, but that
depends how often you switch cars... If you
plan to keep + mod the car than the Cobalt
does sound like a better option.

Absolutely it is. The two cars are surprisingly similar. They share the same base 1.8L VVTi engine, and the up-level engine is in fact a slightly detuned version of the VVTLi engine. I believe, if I remember correctly (its been some time since I read the full specs) it has a slightly lower compression ratio, and ecu changes.

201 lbs isnt much with the vvt in the 2.4 eco and the higher trq number would be faster

The most important stat is 1.8L vs 2.4L. If you like an engine that you have to rev like crazy to make any power, and then shift over and over again, buy the Corolla, it has a very narrow powerband.

But hey, its a Toyota, so it must be better right?
