After giving my SCX to my younger brother this spring, he's done more work on it that I did in 4 years! He and my dad just finished repairing and painting the bumpers and spoiler on the car, and I thought I'd share some pictures.
Here is what it looked like back when I got it...
Thanks to the previous owner for trashing the stock bumpers. Front had been torn off near the foglights, and the rear had a tear in it!
So a few years back I nabbed a good bumper for the car, but it was teal. Here comes the HVLP action...
The car was purchased by the original owner by me in 2001 with 126K on the clock, a bad coil housing cover and alternator. I got the car running, tuned up, and started restoring it...but quickly ran out of funds. So it sat in storage for years until I could work on it. Well, I decided to give it to my 15 year-old brother who has loved the car just as much as I did, and he's been spending a lot of time in the garage this summer.
Just wanted to give him props, and remind everyone to encourage those young gearheads!

i would just want the engine in that bad boy
1989 Turbo Trans Am #82, 2007 Cobalt SS G85
JAMMIT- He fixed the broken window regulator (like all N-Body cars of that year it was cracked), painted and undercoated it, ordered a new air deflector for the front end, and other miscellaneous goodies from GMPartsDirect.com.
I did plenty to the car as well, its just that it sat more than it ran when I had it. I tinkered with it, but wound up buying my Cobra and haven't looked back.
This way, he'll take a little "ownership" in the car instead of just driving it into the ground. He hopes to buzz around high school with it, and then restore it 100% someday. The only stipulation I gave him was if he ever wanted to sell it, he give me first dibs.
Rod- They're a blast to drive! While I love seeing a W41 in a J-body, or any hopped up Quad or TC for that matter, I hate seeing just the motors pirated from these cars...there's a lot more to them IMHO
.
Normal LG0s can be converted to W41s easily; don't ruin an original Quad442 or SCX to get one.
Good to see one of Olds's last gasps of decency still on the road. If some car company would produce a similar car to an SCX today, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
this will be the first and only time i envy a 15 year old
nice looking there...It's too bad when I ususally see that car they are often in pretty bad shape...
