GM to End Its Employee-Discount Incentive
15 minutes ago
DETROIT - General Motors Corp. plans to end next week its highly successful discount program that allowed customers to buy GM vehicles at the price employees pay, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday. The deal fueled a huge surge in GM sales in June and rivals Ford and Chrysler offered similar plans this month.

The program has been in place since June 1. It was originally scheduled to end July 5 but the company extended it until Monday, and some analysts and dealers had suspected GM would extend the program through Labor Day.

GM spokeswoman Deborah Silverman confirmed Wednesday that the company will end the program Monday. She said the company doesn't plan to announce any other incentive deals on Monday.

The discount boosted GM's sales by 41 percent in June, and the company also is expected to report double-digit sales increases this month when it reports July sales next week. The program was so successful that Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG matched it in July.

Ford spokesman Dan Bedore said Wednesday that the company doesn't plan to announce whether it is extending the discount program until Monday, when the current discount expires.

A message was left with a DaimlerChrysler spokesman.

GM shares fell 33 cents to $36.63 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange, while Ford shares lost 8 cents to $10.78. DaimlerChrysler's U.S. shares rose 57 cents to $43.55 on the NYSE.

yeah two months is a long time..if they kept running it...it wouldnt need to be employee discount anymore...it would be regular pricing.

It's a way to move 05 inventory and make way for the 06's, i think it's a great idea, but two months is a long time, and it doesn't give people the urgency to buy a new car.

^^^
not neccessarily

people will still want new cars
and the new trucks will be out soon so i think sales will drop a little bit, not too much

I think the idea was to get people in the showrooms who normally wouldn't buy from gm

like people who are stuck on honda or toyota etc

We supply GM with steel, so I can get a discount also. I'm not sure if it's the same as an employee discount but at least it's something.

^^They fell because fleet were not buying as they were in the past. Regular sales were same.^^

Save from Corvette, Cadillac, GM Trucks and SUVS, GM need lots to go in product portfolio if they ever want to sell what they are asking on the window sticker (MSRP).

I'm pretty sure I bought my 05 Sunfire in may for less than it would have been in june with the employee discount. It's just another "get you into a new car" program, that just happened to be wildly successful with the masses
