1996 Cougar Problem. Need help ASAP!!!
Wednesday, July 20, 2005 3:05 PM
So my wife has a 1996 Mercury Cougar with a V6. Make a long story short, I just had to replace the alternator and battery. When I hook the battery up, the car alarm (which I didn't know it had) goes off, and I can not find a way to shut it off. There is no key fob or anything like that. I need to know how to shut that alarm off. I've called 5 dealerships. 4 had no clue, and 1 accused me of trying to steal the car. Anyone have any ideas?

my wife just bought one just like yours. i don't think ours has one because we just replaced the battery. but if you can find the alarm, just pull the wires. by the way, anyone know what cars brakes interchange with the cougar, besides the t-bird? maybe the mustang?

I would have wrote you a poem, but I couldn't find anything that rhymed with F@#K OFF!

Most factory alarms can be turned off with the key in the ignition. You usually have to toggle it a few times from on to off. Some have a certain sequence.

I had a 94 thunderbird...I didnt have problems with the alarm, but with the horn...if you dont want to totally disable the alarm, then disable the horn that way you dont hear it

Thanks for the replys, everyone. It appears to be an aftermarket alarm set-up, so tomorrow after work, I"m going to find the controll box and disconnect it, and hope for the best.

Stephanie, no we haven't. If that ever does need to be replaced, I'll just replace the whole car. We're not exactly attached to it at all.

Well, good news. I was able to unplug the alarm wiring so that the starter is still connected and everything is working fine!!! Everything that is except for the alarm, which is fine by me. So: problem solved. Thanks to everyone for their input. I'm going to look into the headgasket recall tomorrow when I get out of work.

Thanks again!!!

Its not a cheap fix so if I were you guys, I would have them looked at.

Also, transmissions seem to be kinda @!#$ty in em. I had over 2000 spent on transmission work and it wasn't even replaced (courtesy of my warranty )...My mom went through 5 transmissions in 10 years with her Ford too.
