89 Honda Civic LX- Anyone know about this car?
Friday, July 15, 2005 5:42 PM
Can anyone post a link, or cut n' paste an article that gives the vitals on this vehicle?

Weight, Hp, Tq, Mpg, fuel tank size, etc. (and what type of engine it has, don't know anything about their B16, d16a etc.)

Also, if you know what kind of motor could be swapped in relatively easily, let me know.

It's a standard tran, 4dr

Its a 1.5L SOHC non-vtec motor. Who cares how much horsepower it has its crap. Total junk. There are a few options you have.

The B series motor swaps in pretty easy. Meaning B16, b18 out of either the LS/GSR/Type R. However the ITR motor is expensive and overrated.

To swap you'll need the motor/tranny/ecu/axles.

You could also do a minime swap. Which is also known as the frankenstein swap. You swap the head and the vtec selenoid from a 1.6L SOHC Vtec D16y8 or d16z6 depending on year. Which will make it a 1.5L SOHC Vtec. Or you could swap the 1.6L in. You can use your stock tranny and axles. However the tranny is not that greatest, bad gear ratios so even if you do the minime swap or swap the whole motor I suggest an Si tranny.

Also the 1.6L DOHC non-vtec is considered a D series motor.

Honda's are like legos. You can collect em, build em, trade em with your friends. D-Series motors are all interchangeable with parts, B series motors are are interchangeable with themselves.

If you want to stick with the D16 www.d-series.org is a good site. FOr the car in general www.ef-honda.com or www.hondatech.com is good.

Have fun, i've been looking for an 89 4 door civic.

the stock motor is NOT junk. slow maybe, but it's Hondas most bullit proof engine. if your going for performance...this motor is 100% the wrong powerplant, but not crap at all. It gets dope fuel economy and will run forever....but not a vtec or any of the "performance" honda motors.
the best swap for the EF Civics is the b16's from the Civic Si. anything else would be to much $$$ as the EF civics had a cable type transmission and most all the REALLY good motors have a hydraulic system. the swap to hydro trannies is possible to do, just not very reasonable.

i have an 1990 LX with the b16a swap. it's a fun car with 160+hp. Also i had a 1989 CRX with the jdm ITR swap in it, and find the only people that find it overrated are people that can't afford the $$$ or time to put one in. it's far from over rated. if your willing to spend.....and spend you will. it's a VERY sweet motor for EF civic.

the mini-me swap however is more popular because it's cheaper...and lighter.

A great site for you to check out would be hondaswap.com

I wouldnt say that... If I had one I would keep the stock motor in it... I would enjoy nearly 50mpg.

JAMMIT, the b16 is not the only swap you can do resonably because of the cable tranny. The b18a from the integra LS in the early 90's is also a cable tranny. So thats a swap also.

^^^Good point, but the best all around is the b16. For price and ease of install, and just basic power upgrade from the stock 1.5.

And no doubt 4door sleeper, they REALLY do get 50mpg, i was VERY tempted to just replace my 1.5 with a newer one just for that reason alone. the only reason my 1.5 blew was the car was VERY beat on and ran for a year with out an oil change or any oil added....i bought it off a guy who just planned to run it into the ground.
Any motor that can run a year on old to no oil, and STILL run is a bad mutha f'er in my book. the motor was trashed but still ran...horribly. but stil in bad shape pulled 40+mpg out of it's butt with out breaking a sweat.

No doubt the 1.5L is an awesome motor as far as reliability and strength. Simply what I meant was performance. Since he was asking about swaps I thought he was asking about motors in the performance aspect of how well it was.

Have you guys seen that video of the guy trying to blow up his 1.5L in his hatch? Runs it for a few minutes with no coolant and no radiator. Still wont die. So they dump some water in the oil. Keeps running and bouncing off the rev limiter. He's driving it around and its smoking like crazy, finally dies and they all cheer. He cranks it up and it crank and cranks and fires back up again. Its nuts.

ya the stock motor can withstand normal driving but they are rated what around 90-100HP if that..

a buddy of mine has one he had the ZC motor put into it though still kept the stock 4 speed MT.. dont know why he should of upgraded the trans but oh well.

Oh man i totally remember that video....that was a 1.5? Wow, i didn't know that. it's rated at like 89hp i believe. but still has some go to it. it was a peppy like guy. my Suzuki side kick is a 1.6 16-valve and the SOHC 1.5 in my civic was much peppier.

The 1.6 in it now is much sweeter. now the car needs paint. it's a horrid looking POS right now.

No, best swap would be B18C paired with YS1 tranny, & can be put together fairly cheap, next good swap would be the B17A. & If you wanted to do hydro tranny its easy as @!#$ with the 150 conversion kit. THe B16A SiR swap is ok, but why do that when theres better
