looking for a good.... family car :-\

Well yeah, I made a couple of posts earlier about how I was moving to CT and my gf's pregnant.... etc. Well I finally made it up here. Was taking my time with the drive and about 7pm on the last day I got in a car accident on the jersey turnpike. It was my fault, I was trying to read one of those blinking caution signs hanging off an overpass, and when I looked back the car in front of me was at a dead stop maybe 50 ft in front of me. Well I might post pics and everything later in the wrecked forum so I'll save the details of the accident but basically I think it's totalled, just waiting for my ins company to appraise it.

So since I have a baby on the way, moved somewhere where they have snow, and have just been in general getting a little bored with j-bodies... I'm on the market for something for 4 doors. Idealy i'd like a 4-door 4wd pickup, but since those weren't really popular until a couple years ago they're all still pretty pricy. Since my insurance rates are going to go nuts I'm going kinda cheap here. So any recommendations for 4-door possibilities that handle alright in the snow? I'd like to go for a subaru legacy sedan or something, one of the later model ones just look like imprezza's only bigger. Trying to keep it around 10k if I can though. Not entirely sure what I'm going to do though I'll have to see what happens when the insurance companies are done with me.

For around 10k you can find a Regal GSE or Grand Prix GTP and throw a pulley and a couple of other things on there and not miss ur J at all! I have two babyseats in the back and i leave em in when i go to the track.

along the same lines as Nick, you could get the suzuki aerio sx which is a nice little 4 door wagon with some pep, and has optional awd

also cant go wrong with a camry or an accord

Hey, man. What part of CT did you move to? I"m living in New Britain right now.... Hit me an email if you want.

I personally have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra. It would make a great family car. Or even the bigger Sonata if you want a V6!! It's not the most fun car in the world, but the reliability is amazing, the waranty is fantastic, and the gas consumption is minimal. I'd be more than willing to answer any other questions you may have, or suggest my dealer who still knows me by name almost 2 yrs later...

un4given: harwinton, you're probably like 45 min from me, but i'm new to the area so maybe i'm wrong *shrug*

redgote: i will never, ever (ever!) buy a chrystler minivan. I mean I think it would take a bit of shoving to get me in a minivan in the first place... even if I had 5 kids then they can fight over who doesn't have to walk to school (just kidding....) I like some chrystler vehicles but for the most part they're absolute crap... the paint is the worst in the industry.

And I'd like to if at all possible avoid the station wagons and itty-bitty 4-doors. zline got closer to what I was thinking... I actually did look at accords. What I ran across and I almost forgot they existed (never see them in FL) is the Subaru Legacy sedan's. I mean 2000 on it's hard to find a nicer looking sedan for that price, not to mention they're AWD :-) I've been looking around and sometimes you can find one with like 70k on it for around $10k. Wondering if these cars have a rep for lasting though... not sure

Thanks for the input guys!

Legacy sedans are VERY nice, and very reliable. You couldn't go wrong at all. But if you're looking for more of a midsize sedan, I'd look at the Mazda 6, and the brand new Hyundai Sonata as well. Any of those three cars would be a wise choice.

I'm not sure where Harwington is, to be honest. I've been here for less than 2 years now, so I don't know my way around everything yet, either. But welcome to the state!!

LOL@Fosgate

I like the new hyundai sonata's... but the problem is I ONLY like the new ones lol, can't afford one of those yet. Although at the rate I'm going by the time I can afford anything maybe I can find a used one... looks like my financer wasn't so kind as to provide GAP INSURANCE. Gah I thought they all did that... definately ask about GAP when financing a car... or just don't finance a car through Carmax.

I like the mazda6... but thought I read somewhere they had low customer satisfaction or something...

Another one I thought of today that I always thought they looked alright for a sedan was the later model Chevy Impala's. Anybody here anything good or bad about these or drive one? They're cheap as hell for a used one and they all have the 3400 v6 in them... hmmm...

Well I got the call from the insurance company today telling me the car is in fact totalled... so I will be heading all you guys' advise when I go car shopping (except scott's... i hate minivans! lol) I'm really leaning towards a subaru if I can find a good deal on one. And yeah it's hard to find a decent deal on a used CTS lol, they didn't make them til 03 so used ones are still like 20k... i'm trying to stay around 10k.

damn straight. my gtp has pleanty of space for everything, and they drive well in snow. not as well as 4wd, but i didnt get stuck all winter. they're fun, they look good, and i got my '97 for $6000. what more could you ask for? (rhetorical question, dont go about answering it)

Andy

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

Lol just happened to notice that my post got dug up again. Yeah umm... HAHA!

But seriously after a couple of people mentioning GTP's, I seriously want to buy one now. Test drove a 2003 GTP, they ride awesome but didn't have quite as much acceleration as I was hoping for. Not sure about that one though... the car didn't feel quite right and it was a crappy dealership so I wouldn't be surprised if it had some problems.

GTP!!

I ran high 13's without any internal mods... (pulley, ECU, T-stat), and I'm sitting @ 13.2 @ 107 with a cam (Thrasher Race Cam), 3.2" pulley, DVLDOC Alky injection, DHP ECU, and a full piston/valvetrain/bearing combo... and I'm missing traction even with 245/50/16's.
