1999 Olds Alero: I have no heat or A/C please help
Monday, July 11, 2005 8:26 PM
Hi, my name is Nick and I am obviously new here. I found this site because I was having problems with the climate control speeds on my 1999 Olds Alero. At first I lost both the first and second speeds. I saw a really helpful post on here so I knew it must be the blower motor resistor. So the other day, I lost everything. I get no air at any speed, A/C or heat. I get some air when I am driving, but that does not count because the motor is not kicking on to crank the air through the cabin. So I went to GM and bought a new resistor. The old one that came out of my car was considerably shorter than the one GM gave to me. They said that the part number for the old ones are not made, so I got something that was made out of metal instead of plastic. The important thing is that the connections matched up. I got it out, plugged the new one in and nothing. So I pulled the blower motor, and jumped it using my battery and two wires, and it kicked on, so I know that works. I also checked the fuses, and none were blown. Under the hood I saw the resistors and they did not appear to be shot either. I pulled the dash, thinking there would be a resistor there that might have blown, but I did not see one. So I am at a loss. I have no air or heat on any speed. It acts like it is off even on the 4th setting. I need some help please. Anyone have a similar problem to this? It seems weird that my car would have air and heat one day and then nothing works. I am wondering if the new resistor I got was shot to begin with. So I may try to replace it again and see if that makes a difference. I cannot think what to do next. I am really frustrated. Please help me. Thanks, Nick

Also the old resistor was blistered and black, so I am fairly certain it was shot.

The "Help! My a/c quit!" post

The "Help! I have no heat!" post

Those are for J's, but assuming you have the 2.4L engine, they might work for you as well.

^^^ Damn you!!!!

GM's have had some problems with the 4 kopek resistors they've been using... Better to get the good stuff from delco parts.

Thanks for the replies. I called GM today and they told me it's 1 of 3 things. The resistor which will work in the highest setting, and it does not. The blower motor itself, but that works because I jumped it, or the actual cluster control. So tomorrow I am going to pull the dash apart and multimeter all of the wires that go to this @!#$ to see if they all have power. Then I am going to take a wire, run it from the battery to the blower motor power cable to see if it click on while plugged in. I am fairly certain it is the dash switch, but who knows.

Lash, that linky no worky.
