Hey Goodwrench!

Haven't been on the board in a while. Work/family crap has been keeping me real busy, no time to read posts...

Did you notice that 5 of the 10 on the list are trucks? If you count the minivan as a truck, it would be 6 of 10. (But I wouldn't count it as a truck.)

I'm not a truck guy but I guess maybe it's not such a bad idea that GM is investing in it's trucks. Unless gasoline goes up to $4.00/gallon, truck sales will continue at the same level that they are now. But once they're done with the trucks, they'd better haul *ss and get some new cars out there...

On another unrelated note, check out this video about GM's hydrogen cars. Pretty interesting stuff.

F150 is the best selling truck, but when you combine Silverado and Sierra, they beat F150. and since they are, not the same truck, but very similar. So GM is beating out ford really.

so....silverado doesn't count 1500, 2500, and 3500? Same story guys...no complaining lol. They aren't including their lincoln trucks in their tabs...only the F series. So that excuse is null. however, we are gaining regardless

Total sales for 6 months 2005:
Lincoln Mark-LT-- 2,759 units

June sales:
Lincoln Mark-LT--787units

Add that to the total of Ford's fullsize pick-ups

Geo:
Yep, you may be right, don't forget a large chunk goes to fleet aswell. And sales of Large SUVs and pick-up slowed down this year compared to previous years, mostly because of gas prices.
Like I said before, investing in trucks may be a good "short-term" solution. But the day $3+ per gallon appears nationally. Those 14mpg trucks with their 25+gallons gas tank won't sound to tempting for the consumer that used to buy a truck because it is the "in" thing. With no efficient car or truck in the lineup, what will that consumer do?
See my point?

Mongoose:
Both actually. Ford slumped and Chevy jumped.

Good to see the outdated silvarado is pretty even with the brand new f-series. Ford can't be happy with this.

Ford actually counts the F-250 and above as commercial vehicles. Not to sound like a Ford commercial, but they are not looking as bad as you might think:

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/06/09/118995.html

Quote:

Ford plans for unprecedented back-to-back annual F-Series sales of 900,000 or more -- New 2006 Ford LCF entry will extend Ford dominance in commercial trucks -- Ford expects to increase sales in every segment of its commercial truck business

SAN ANTONIO, June 9 -- Ford, the dominant force in the U.S. truck market, plans to extend the leadership of its best-selling line of pickups and commercial vehicles by growing its truck business even further this year.

In the heart of Ford Truck Country in Texas, Ford is announcing that F-Series trucks are on track to deliver unprecedented "back-to-back" chart- topping sales of 900,000 or more for 2005.

The company also promises to extend its stronghold as America's one-stop truck maker by expanding in every segment of its commercial truck business -- including the introduction this month of a new player, the 2006 Ford LCF.

"Ford is undeniably the powerhouse in the truck business," says Ford Division President Darryl Hazel. "We intend to extend our lead over the competition in pickups as well as the commercial vehicle business by continuing to deliver on our promises and build the best trucks in the industry."

900,000 or More, Back-to-Back

F-Series has been the only nameplate -- car or truck -- to cross the 800,000 sales mark in more than 30 years. It has done it nine times -- and 2005 would be a 10th year. Last year, Ford set an all-time truck record with 939,511 F-Series sales. Plans are for 2005 sales of 900,000 or more.

The strong selling rate of F-Series is leading Ford to make strong gains in the market. Since the introduction of the all-new Ford F-150 in September 2003, F-Series' share of the full-size pickup segment has climbed 1.6 percentage points to 36.5 percent.

In fact, Ford sells one F-Series truck every 34 seconds in the U.S.

Ford Commercial Truck Business To Grow In Every Segment

Ford also is America's best-selling brand of Class 1 - 7 trucks and rules the commercial vehicle business with more than 40 percent share of the market. With offerings from 19 different manufacturers, two out of every five commercial trucks wear a Ford blue oval. In fact, Ford has outsold Chevrolet and Dodge combined for the last 16 years.

This year, Ford's commercial trucks are on track to outperform their industry-leading 2004 sales of nearly 325,000 units. Ford's full commercial vehicle lineup includes F-250 and F-350 pickups; F-250 through F-750 Chassis Cabs; E-Series van, wagon and cutaway models; and the all-new Ford LCF. While the F-Series pickups appeal to buyers for both commercial and recreational use, Ford's commercial trucks are designed to meet the unique needs of customers who need pure work-truck capability.

"We know that one truck doesn't fit all customers in this market," says Hazel. "That's why we're dedicated to being the industry's leading full-line truck provider with a product to meet every customer need. It's what helps us keep customers loyal. Nothing sells Ford trucks like other Ford trucks. For every medium-duty truck we sell, we also sell five Super Duty pickups."

Among new offerings that will drive growth are AdvanceTrac(R) with RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control) -- now standard on all 2006 E-Series Extended Wagon models -- and the introduction of standard integrated upfitter switches on every 2006 Super Duty Chassis Cab model.

Ford Enters a New Segment with Low Cab Forward

Ford's full line of commercial trucks gets even stronger this year as the new 2006 Ford LCF joins the marketplace. It gives Ford an entry among low cab forward trucks, one of the fastest growing segments in the commercial vehicle industry.

Engineered for easy upfit, superior power and ride, the new Ford LCF is designed to deliver best-in-class maneuverability and the segment's tightest turning diameter. Ford LCF customers will use their vehicles for any number of commercial applications -- from general delivery and utility to landscaping and construction.

"The Ford LCF is designed to answer an unmet customer need with a viable, new alternative in what is for Ford a highly incremental segment," explains Joe Castelli, director, Ford Commercial Truck Sales and Marketing.

The Backbone of American Industry

Ford provides more commercial truck products with more configurations than any other manufacturer. Working closely with upfitters and body builders, Ford provides big and small businesses with the tools to get the job done in virtually any industry -- from energy providers, to the delivery industry, retailers, emergency crews and landscapers. In the past six months alone, Ford has added Fed-Ex, U-Haul, DHL and Verizon to its fleet business. They join hundreds of other customers, including Home Depot, Sears and Time Warner.

"We give our customers the best possible tools to get the job done," says Castelli. "With the industry's broadest and strongest product range, plus the best dealer and upfitter alliances in the business, Ford is well positioned to attract even more customers in 2005 and beyond."

It makes no difference what they classify them as with an all new truck ford is only beating the Silverado by 23,000 trucks and then there's the Sierra to factor in. As much as hype the f-series got, they aren't proving anything with sales.

oh ya being the only ones to cross the 800k sales line for the past few years doesnt prove anything in there sales at all.. god what POS sales records..

oh ya if someone pops up with reliability issues ill cover this one too..

97 F150 over 100k miles on it 4.6 triton full tow package oil and trans coolers still runs like new with no major things done only basic tune ups and still pulls around a 18 foot boat along with towing cars and several several moving episodes.

^^^^you totally missed my point. I'm talking about how even though ford redsigned the f-series and all the hype it got they still aren't doing much better at all in the sales then the outdated silverado. I wasn't talking about past sales at all. Just saying how Ford has to be dissapointed with sales of the new trucks.

Eh, they're beating GM on a technicality in sales.

Quote:

Try covering the 6.0 Powerstroke engine though. We have so many of those damn things coming into our shop for turbos, injectors, pcm reprogrammings, an other things that we could keep busy on those alone. It's honestly the WORST engine I've ever seen engineered, and I've replaced 2.4L waterpumps. Granted, the 4.6 and 5.4 mod-motors aren't too bad.

As far as commercial-use pickups (F-250 and up) it makes me sick to see the sheer waste that some people have. Honestly, probably 60% of all these heavy duty trucks that come in are used for nothing more than driving around in. Most owners of these "work trucks" would break down into convulsions and start foaming at the mouth if a spot of dirt was found on the seat of their F-350 Super Duty Crew Cab Dually with 6.0 engine, tonneau cover, and chrome wheels.

GT,

I understand your point, totally.

However, if they clear out the engineering logjam by getting these trucks out in the showrooms, maybe then they can concentrate on cars again. Good news?

As for efficiency, haven't you seen those Chevy commercials on TV where they say they have 9 cars that get over 30 MPG? I suspect they're counting about 5 Aveo's, 3 Cobalts and maybe a Ecotec motored Malibu in that ad...

Also, I see where both GM and Dodge are slated to release trucks with some variation on displacement on demand. That should be good news for folks with the necessity to keep large trucks.

We both know there's no way to sell cars to folks who don't like what they're looking at...
That's a whole different problem... I think what GM has is an image issue (in some regards) more than a real hardware issue. For all intents and purposes a Malibu may be just as good a car as a Nissan Altima, but if people don't like the looks of the Malibu's styling or interior design, what can GM do?

<sarcasm>I know! Employee pricing for everyone! </sarcasm>

Has anybody thought that is why they are first??

Hate ford or love ford, they are pleasing their customers in every direction. You want something that can haul, you get the Lariat or the King Ranch (both are less than 38k) or if you want to haul azz and still be able to tow general things (boat, jet ski, atv, etc) then you can get the svt lightning (still under 38k). And Ford keeps the resale value.

We use F350s at work and they just keep running and running. Those Tritons are nice strong motors. We off road in them, tow transformers and equipment, not to mentiont he huge tool boxes and utility bed it has. They do very well for work trucks. We have some Chevys and some Dodges out there too and they do the job also but our 350 tears them up for towing and where we can go on the trails. The triton with the Allison 6 speed works wonders.
