Fiero SE vs Cavalier Performance
Monday, July 11, 2005 9:24 AM
I came across a Fiero Se yesterday and was interested in it. Its the notchback 84-87 Se, yeah the 4banger one. its a 4 spd manual. Ive always liked the whole mid engine deal with them. But the question I wanna know. Can this take my 2200 5spd Sedan inthe 1/4 mile. I know for sure my Cavy does 0-60 in 9.09 and the Fiero Gts r pretty quick but those have the 2.8v6. Any ideas????

There's more than a few big block Fieros running around. I can't attest to their streetability, but it is possible. The small block conversion is much more common (and assuming affordable).

As for beating a 2.2L J-car, it won't. The 2.5L I4 in the Fieros are anemic at best. The manual tranny helps, but it won't be fast by any means.

And you don't stupid amounts of understeer, either.

You can stuff in STS Northstar engines into a Fiero.. and I've heard of someone getting a 502 into it, but I think it was BS, or a TON of chassis mods... IIRC it went into a Lambo conversion, and it was a stretched chassis (11" is the most common.

I'd thought about a Fiero Project, with a 2.2 ecotec turbo, and the V8 Archie Finale Kit. Alas, I didn't get one and I'm still trying to figure how to increase the gas mileage on my house.

Did i hear fiero !! They are only the most awesome car you can find for under a thousand almost anywhere. Mid engine is a plus. And they handle like they are on rails. (with correct tires) (damn those firestone firhawk gta 02's) anyways haha. Yea anohter good point is exteriors dont rust out and they are dent resistant like saturns (same guy designed both) Frames on the rust issue.. welll not so good you gotta be picky when looking for one to buy (battery tray, underbody, inner rear fenders, and rear trunk) all rust spots. Uhmm performance wise. the 4 cyls SUCK SUCK SUCK. With that out now. The 6 cyls are arite but still are not fast!. Heres a good list of motors that can be swapped into them

ecotec.
s/c 3800
caddi 4.9
caddi northstar
caddi shortstar (6 cyl northstar)
any small black 350 v8
big blocks with frame mods
3.4 ( dohc , tdc)
3.1
3400 series
3800 non supercharged

the list goes on

and the bodies. Well you can just about buy any kit car you want and it will bolt right up unless you go for 100 percent accuarte kits on the ferraris and lambos that need a stretch

but im sure you guys no all the different kits you can get

The after market for these cars is really good actually
and NOS parts is sweet to
Lots of guys have dedicated fiero junkyards to!

Im sure im missing about a billion sweet things about these cars

Ok here r some more details, its a '84 Fiero Se, has 99k on it. The 2.5L iron duke runs perfectly clutch is ok the slave cylinder will need to be replaced soon. An area on the undercarriage is rusting not bad but enough to be noticed. Under the battery is good but the trunk has completely rusted through, I can easily weld new plates on there. The undercarriage is what I am worried bout. I dont have money for a GT or a nicer Fiero so most likely it will have to do. $500 isnt bad

Right now its not much to look at... Paint is needed badly, and its not the body style I want but its something to work with and its the 'coolest' car i can get for a project car for $500 bux

I'm buying a GT for $2k. I love it but I barely fit in it... I'm hopeing the Sparcos will make it better.

Good find for an SE.

Oh, the Iron Dukes had problems with engine fires. Watch out for oil leaks.

Quad 4s will fit in there pretty good too. I've seen a couple of Quad 4 HO Fieros and one W41 Fiero. They move pretty good. A SC Eco would be fun too.

*sigh*

Only the first month's production run of the 1984 Fiero had the infamous fire problems, and all of them were recalled and had the entire engine replaced due to a faulty head/oiling design. Any other Fiero, be it a 4 or 6 cylinder, poses no more of a fire threat than any other used car of its age and/or mileage.
Re: Fiero SE vs Cavalier Performance

True. But later models still had problems with oil leaks and because of the confinment of the exhaust system, it could start fires. Not common but could happen. True, no more than any other car of the age.

The one I was looking at had the Check Oil at every fill up sticker.

Ever see the warning label they put in '84s? GM actually issued a METAL tag on the deck lid reminding owners that improper maintenance could lead to engine fires. I snagged one from a boneyard just for laughs.

Awesome... I want one.

Heh, how tall are you. I'm thinking of getting this 86FGT but I'm worried that I will not fit in it. Can the seat be moved back any closer to the back wall?

hmm
im thinking of one, but i dunno how my insurance would like that

Re: Fiero SE vs Cavalier Performance

Insurance is cheap on the Fiero. Even full coverage. I would have to pay $35 a month for Texas min. They are old and have the same rates as any other old car of the era.

Pintos are more dangerous and so are old VWs. Yet insurance is cheap for them.

They're at minimum 17 years old and half of them came with a 93 HP engine. You tell me.

I'm only about 5'10", so I don't have trouble fitting in anything. My younger brother (who also owns a Fiasco is around 6"1', and generally doesn't have much trouble. The key to fitting in the car if you have long legs is not to recline the seat back too much. This allows more legroom, although the Fiero's legroom is ample, if you can get in the door.

^^^
true, but they are a "SPORTS CAR" according to insurance agencies
just like the cav
