First, I know nothing about small SUV's, trucks, vans, cross-overs, or SUV's in general.
Not my kind of party.
However, the old man gave me a ring the other day and wants me to help him out with buying a 'small SUV' as his current car is about to blow up. I initially said 'no' and hung up the phone... but the old bastard keeps calling back. I've finally accepted to help him out... only after he called my work # several times and caught me off guard...
...tricky tricky...
So what is out there, really?
Aside from the Chevy Equinox and Hyundai Tucson what else even exists? Feedback links? Reviews?
Any info is appreciated.
The old man is all happy and @!#$ now that I am helping him... he won't shut up... Help jinxedz shut him up.

Chevy Blazer, the 4.3L V6 is a great motor. Cheap to work on, cheap to maintain. Awesome gas mileage, its small yet has lots of room. The seats fold down perfectly flat to put wood down easily or anything else. Looks decent and when I was looking at SUV's we found an 04 with 9K miles on it for 10k. So i'm sure you could find an 02 or so for pretty cheap. Also it would still be under warranty.
look at some jeep cherokees. Those 4.0 I6's last forever or go really cheap and get and explorer.
YEAH I WENT PREMIUM. SO BITE ME!
I like the Blazer and Jeep Liberty's.....my dad has one of each (97 Blazer and 04 Liberty) and they are both solid SUVs. The Blazer even though rated at 190hp compared to the Jeep's 210hp (3.7L V6) seems have a little more umphhh!......prehaps due to the larger displacement. Oh a plus about the Jeep is the excellent turning radius......it simply turns on a dime!
3.0L V6 Ford Escape. Fast as hell. Good on gas. FWD or AWD.
if you were looking for something to haul with id say the jeep liberty, that takes the cake in the class
umm otherwise id say the equinox.....its pretty nice, and has been a hot seller
what about a saturn vue??? a tad more refined, and has the honda engine in it
If youre looking at the Ford Escape, look at the Mercury Mariner, because the interior is that much nicer if you want to spend a little bit more
blazer xtreme with a ls6 and t56 swap and a supercharger.

Cheap SUV, has power, can haul stuff.. I'd take him to look at the Saturn Vue.. Even with the V6, AWD, it's still cheaper than most SUV's out there. I almost bought a base FWD 4cyl, but I opted for the Ion instead..

I didn't like the Jeep liberty's because they have no cargo room in the back.
KevJam wrote:The BEST small SUV is the Subaru Forester, hands down. Look at any comparo or review. It always wins. Excellent resale, safety, reliability, etc., etc., etc. Plus the XT is very fast. It is the 2nd fastest Subaru in the line-up next to the Impreza STi. Take him for a ride in it. He will love it. If he wants a station wagon take a look at the Legacy GT Wagon. Excellent car as well.
yes, somebody knows what's up!
plus, if your dad ever wanted to "pimp it out," damn near every part for a WRX/STi works on the Forester
I think the biggest bang for the buck small SUV is the Suzuki xl-7. If needed, you can seat 7 people! But, if not, you can seat 5 with a ton of cargo room.
Suzuki's have always been pretty reliable too.
I would look into that.

I thought Suzuki's were rated really low for reliability??
Red 2005 Saturn Ion-3 Coupe
how bout a dodge magnum...
we all know they can haul ass....
or id say the forester

i have a ford escape
they are AWESOME. tons of power with alot of it real low end. takes off like mad
all the seats fold flat.
the mazda tribute and the mercury mariner and the ford escape are all the same suv. just with suttle style differences. so look into any of the three.
the forester xt is SWEEER, dotn like the way it looks much, looks like a 4x4 wagon. but its faster than crap but also is $$$$$$$

did they ever put a v8 in an escape?
coulda swore that one had v8 badges
and he kinda sounded like one too
tried to race me lol
but as far as new things the equinox is a pretty nice lil suv
since he wants something cheap that would get my vote

naw its just a v6 badge that looks like the old v8 badges
yeah its v6
i say the escape wins over a eq
both around the same price new 22k
but the escape has slightly better gas mileage and a more powerfull v6 by 15hp
and personally i like the looks better on the escape then the eq
both are nice small suv's

I've always hated ford, but I love my 00 Explorer. 5.0 V8 really moves that thing. AWD is nice for my wife in the rain. Gas mileage isn't the best but not to horrid.
eh..awd is a waist imo..id rather have the option of 2wd or 4wd...i would say go for the blazer zr2..they are just awesome looking with the slight lift over the normal blazer
