mitsubishi gto aka 3000gt vr4

Anyone have any info on these cars, know strengths weaknesses. I know a guy who thinks he will smoke me. I know he has less hp and weighs the same so I should win. He also claims he is stock. So any helpful info would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

The vr4's are all wheel drive twin turbo beasts that have like 300hp stock and have stock 1/4 mile times in the 13's, so even if it is stock, if he has a VR4, then you will tore apart.

They have weak trannies, I they believe have 60/40 awd ratio, 3KGTs are also pigs, weighing in at +3.8K lbs with all the gizmos they comes with, it'll probably have you out the hole if the dude can launch, but you will probably have him in the long run. They run anywhere from 13.6 to 14.1 usually trapping 99-102mph. Also comes with 320hp with 315lbs/tq.

Hopefully he doesnt turn up the boost when you run him, most 3KGTs are tired so, my guess is that you'll take him, GTOs do run an average of low to mid 13s right?

How long have you had the car and you are already getting challenges, lol.

I think you will be able to take them....not too knowledgeable on 3000GT's.

Have a good one,
Justin

I don't know about "smoke" him....

The VR4 is a sweet car though, don't for a second overlook it. They have their fair share of problems, but they can certainly move. Its older though. Your biggest concern should be traction. If you are sitting there lighting them up, the VR4 can make it really close. While not the greatest AWD, certainly enough to stick and go to some extent.

That being said, i believe it will be close, but the GTO should win. If his car is in good shape, i wouldn't expect you to smoke him by any means.

Comparable to an STi....but old.... around 300hp and AWD...if he launches hard, it will be a game of catch-up for you, but you will get him..

Post this on LS2GTO.com and see what they have to say....

Weakness = the car is an absolute porker. The VR4 weighs in at over 3700lbs, without driver, etc.

Call me crazy, but I would put money on the 3000 VR4 myself. A pig it is, but it puts down the power well with that AWD. Now if it were not a VR4, you would certainly have him, but don't underestimate the VR4 ----- and I say this as an AVID Mitsu hater.

my opinion is that i think you would take him unless of course you are a crappy driver or he has lots of power adders under the hood hes not telling you about..

depend on the year to how fast they are. the 95 stock has been able to hit 13.10 & ive seen with my own eyes at the track, the guy was just hit that time consistantly. The late models have been know to be faster. Yeah they are heavy, but they have no problem pulling their own wieght. They lack the drive train loss like other AWDs at top end. The AWD ratio kind of suck but kind of dont. The pull more on the front wheels then it does on the back but this also gives it less drivetrain loss then other AWDs & more to the wheels.

H O N D A, oh how well love it when we smokin V8s, all day, every day, it dont stop, Im rolling in my Honda like Im running from the cops.
BUT Now you know, cause you're Jon Doe, in a black bag, a tag on your toe, I built the Honda, I felt the pain, you're victimized with no one to blame, you're just another victim kid.....

my friend has a 91 VR4 and with JUST mufflers and a OLD OLD clutch (only capable of 1.95 60's which is not near par with a good AWD Driver) he cut a 13.3@103. If he gets a good launch and is a good driver and you get a bad launch he'll probably win. If you can hang with him out of the hole there is no doubt you'll pull him pretty hard up top. Its all in the launch man!

12.71@107 last year
12.80@111mph with 1.9 60' and missed second gear, DOH

have you ever seen the size of the turbo's on a vr4? they're almost as small as my K03S, which can hit 20 psi WELL before 3500 rpm... Plus its a twin setup, so lag really won't be an issue.

AWD power drain IS his disadvantage, the biggest one besides weight. The AWD setup on those cars is probably the worst I've ever seen. First off, its a FWD car with a center diff, center driveshaft, and rear diff that look like they were thrown on as an afterthought. The propshaft to the rear diff has i think 4 u-joints in it, and is nowhere near a straight path to the rear diff. Then the power has to go through the rear diff into crappy little rear halfshafts...

The other thing is that depending on his experience with AWD, he may not know how to make use of it. I can't tell you how many people I've seen with EVO's or STI's at the track that can't do better than a 2.0 60' time because they're trying to launch it like a FWD or RWD car.

Also, if he's around 90,000 miles on the odo, his ecu is bound to melt down sooner or later, happens all the time on mitsu ecus from the early to mid 90's with that kind of mileage. @!#$ty internal electrical components and a lack of proper heatsinks puts a hurtin on your fuel injection real quick.

It's ok...I don't know much about FI the way it is...

Just that most stock turbo'd cars have very little lag...thats all
