Good news on GM's RWD future
Monday, June 27, 2005 8:49 AM
Stung by the success of the Ford Mustang and Chrysler 300, Chevrolet is studying rear-drive cars. The brand could decide this year whether to build more rwd vehicles.

The rwd Mustang, 300 and Dodge Magnum are selling well without cash rebates. Ford expects to produce 192,000 Mustangs this year.
And Dodge is expected to resurrect the Challenger name for a rwd Mustang-fighter around 2009.

With the exception of the Corvette, all Chevrolet cars have front-wheel drive.

It was asked whether a rwd sedan, coupe or Chevrolet Camaro-type vehicle are being considered, GM said, We are looking at some of those segments right now.

GM says it is not sure whether Chevrolet will have a rwd concept car at the Detroit auto show in January.

General Motors was planning to introduce the first in a family of rwd cars for North America in 2007. The vehicles were planned on a rwd platform code-named Zeta. But the automaker's financial problems forced it to cancel Zeta this year.

Yet GM insiders still expect the company to develop a range of rwd cars, although the platform and timetable are unclear. Already in the pipeline are the Pontiac Solstice, a rwd roadster coming this fall and a sister car, the Saturn Sky, scheduled to arrive next spring. Both were developed on the small rwd Kappa platform.

Chevrolet's last large high-volume rwd car was the Caprice, which was scrapped after the 1996 model year. The sporty rwd Camaro was dropped at the end of the 2002 model year.

"Do we want to take that head-on? Absolutely we do. There's an opportunity for a rear-wheel-drive coupe."

The need to bring back the Camaro and make it look like a 67 but with modern drivetrain!! I will sell my SS in a heartbeat if that car was made. This is good news. I loved the current GTO but with it's demise iminent this is good news indeed.

I thought there was a deal that they can't build another camaro due to contract with some plant? So the Camaro name is dead unless it gets built at the old plant. Either way, I'm glad to hear RWD is coming back

I bet if they made a sweet RWD car that was into a ton of luxuray. Just a big bad ass V8 that guzzled gas, threw you back in the seat, burned tires slamming through gears, and had a loud ass true dual exhaust system, it would sell like hot cakes. Everyone is going to scream about gas prices, but if the car was around 30k you know how many guys would want that thing?

The GTO does nothing for me. Maybe it would if I test drove one, but in my eyes its nothing to an LS1 camaro.

screw that, solid rear axle!. been that way since 67, and it has worked the best for drag racing.

no its not. Ran 13.2 At 109 bone stock with a @!#$ty 2.1 60' which is no better then the ls2's are running right now. (yes i know about the occasional 12.8's out of them but the camaro/ta has done that 2. Hell, I've already beat an Ls2 with intake and exhaust. From a roll and stop. Not impressed with the ls2 making 400 horsepower.

U do realize i have numerous vids of them pullin 1.9 60's and still running 13's? u do realize my car is 3820 pounds with no spare tire and jack (which is always in there now) and 1/8 tank of gas. Yes i infact weigh the SAME as a GTO. 3900+ pounds. sorry the ls2 doesn't get my vote for great car but hell, its only an opinion.

You are correct... they have a contract with the Canadian Auto Workers union that the Camaro nameplate can only be built in the St Therese plant. One problem with that... GM tore the plant down and sort of created a loophole. If you want to read the whole PHR article you can find it here.

Can we say we told them so? The moment the camaro got dropped and the 05 retro-style mustang came out, GM totally handed Ford total domination of the RWD sports cars. Chrysler may be able to steal some of that with the Charger and upcoming Challenger, but those names are so iconic that most people think of it as sacrilege to name newer cars after such classics. My dealer thought the Charger was going to sell big, but we've got the same original 4 on the lot that came in a month ago, none of them have moved....

GM really dug themselves into a hole on this one. Although i did kinda chuckle to read "GM is studying rwd".... they've been studying and producing RWD cars for the last what, 80 years?
