I am seriously going to import a JDM car.
I started out wanting an RX7, but then realised i would have to wait 1-1.5 years to get the Twin Turbo FD3S. Plus the RE's are very unreliable and guzzel gaz. So next i considered a celica, 180SX and an MR2. Since there is a 15 year rule for importing into Canada any vehicle has to be 1991 or less (it goes by date of production not sale).
After deciding that i didn't want a turboed car (want to be safe fincancially until i'm through school), that left me with the NA celica and the NA MR2. I belive both have the same 3S-GE engine available.
After looking at the resale of each in the autotrader.ca (and .com) i found the MR2 to be worth double the celica. I don't need to seat more than my fiance and myself at the moment so having a 2-seater is ok.
I can get a (1990-1991) NA MR2 to my door for ~$4500 CAD (~$3500 USD) with Air, PW, Leather and a T-top. The car has about 70,000 KM's on it and no rust or body damage, and is in good working condition.
I'm going for it regardless, but i am wondering what kind of modifications i have to play with. I havn't found a kit i like better than the stock one and as far as bolt on's i havn't found much at all.
I think i may just end up throwing some Nitrous at it (50 shot) with an intake and Headder-back, if i can find them.
Does anyone have any experience with this vehilce, info on the aftermarket support or modifying it?

Luc: If you really wanted to import, Yes, there is a 15 year limit, and you will have to pay duties, plus taxes at the import country, and possibly GST here... if the car is over 15 years, it'll go by redbook value of a similar car.
You can get MR2's here, and if you're not going to go with a turbo kit, there are sail-panel scoop kits you can get to funnel air into the engine directly. From what I've heard though, the car is a little tempermental.
Good luck!

GAM: i figured you'd be the first to reply. The company i'm importing through will take care of all the importing fees. I pay them the total amount and they do the rest. They import a lot of skylines, i figured you may have come across them; they are redlineimports based in Edmonton. Do you have any opinions about them?

the 3sge is a decent enough motor, though the 3sgte is less finicky than the n/a version.
i've owned one of each...the n/a motor died on me a HELL of a lot more than the turbo version.
just me $.02

Are they the same block and internals, except lower Comp Ratio and Turbocharged?

Does anybody have any links to where you can buy jdm cars in Canada? Even better Ontario?
Thanks
3sfe 3sge 3sgte use the same block. But that is about it. The NA model MR2 is a very good car to get if you have never driven a rear engine car before. Not alot of power were you will slide out all over the place. Just remember if you get that car that it sucks in the snow and never brake in a turn in wet and going a little fast. If you go to
www.mr2oc.com you can see all about how to drive those cars and just about anything you want to know about those cars. Even if there is one for sale in Canada right now instead of having to import one. But at that price in good shape with no rust.... you have a hell of a deal. T-tops are nothing on those cars though. You see everyone fighting for a hard top though.
If you can believe it they actually made a convertable once. Like less than 20 were made I think it was but they are out there. Check on that site first for a car though. That way you can test it out and look at it before anything.
Just curious what is different about the JDM MR2 you want to get and the North American versions we had at the time?
AmazingJay
The only difference would be some ECU programming and the RHD thing..
Luc: I've heard of them, but I haven't called them or anything, so I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help for you.

Not in Ontario, but they will ship it to you. I have been correspnding with them for a few weeks now. They seem helpful and informative, but i do not personally know anyone who has purchased through them.

I should make a post about them to see if anyone on the .ORG has bought from them.

If .
Have you ever owned/driven one?
That site requies a membership.
Jay: the NA version in northamerica has 140Hp and the JDM one has 165Hp. But the reason i want a JDM one is the price and the condition. The cheapest one in Canada autotrader is $6500 but has 113K miles. most go for about 10 Grand.
Grand AM Matt: Do you know of any reputable JDM import companies?
www.drluc.ca
I honestly think it would be better for you to just build it yourself instead of spending a ton of money for a RHD car (which can be a pain) and 25 HP
