Cobalt SS's Dominate Mosport Grand am Cup-- (PICS)
Sunday, June 19, 2005 11:54 AM
The closing laps between the #00 Georgian Bay Motorsports Chevrolet Cobalt and the #70 Speedsource Mazda RX-8 put on quite a show at Mosport as Jamie turned the heat on to pass Tremblay in Turn 8 with three laps remaining for the class win.

"We just got a little beside each other coming into (Turn) 5 and it was a drag race from there," explained Jamie Holtom on the closing laps. "Luckily our Cobalt has lots of power so it was good coming up the straight. Just on the last lap there was a bit of contact but that's racing. It wasn't a blatant attempt to spin me out or anything, it is just close tight racing and it is great that Grand-Am can produce that. We recognized that the Cobalt was going to be a really strong program so we really backed it 100% and it is starting to show."

Some other notes from qualifying, the SS' took both spots on the front row.

“I’ve been racing here since 1970,” Jim Holtom said. “This is my home track. I grew up 20 miles north of here and I used to sneak onto this track on hot summer nights in my ’65 Chevy Biscayne and go out and race in the middle of the night all by myself. I know this track. I have multiple 24-hour races here and a lot of time. It’s a scary track. It’s a track, to be honest, where I think bravery is maybe a little more important than skill. It’s not a tentative track. It’s something you can’t be at all tentative about. You’ve got to just steer and put the gas down and go for it. I love this track. I hate it when it’s wet or when it’s alternating between wet and dry, but the car is hooked up well. We still have a few more things to do with it, but the handling is absolutely spectacular.”

It was another banner day for the new Chevrolet Cobalt, as Tom Lepper made it a 1-2 sweep for the American pocket rocket by placing the No. 32 Franklin American Mortgage Cobalt on the outside of the front row. Lepper logged a best time of 1:34.922 (93.260 mph) in the car he will share with Bo Roach. The qualifying performance comes on the heels of last weekend’s Chemung Canal Trust 200 at Watkins Glen, where three Cobalts finished inside the class top five.

“It’s pretty cool, we’re doing our best for Chevy,” Lepper said. “I had a little bit of a problem in that I put a little bit too old of a tire on the rear. It took me an extra lap or two to get really up to temperature. I just trusted the tires and trusted the car and drove on in and boom, it worked. It’s a great, great place. I haven’t run here since ’89 and it’s good to be back. The Franklin American Cobalt pulled us through.”

Starting third in ST will be Don Salama in the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i with a qualifying lap at 1:34.932 (93.250 mph), followed by Daniel Colembie in the No. 12 TC Kline Racing BMW Z4 at 1:35.088 (93.097 mph). Eric Curran placed the No. 27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S fifth on the grid at 1:35.227 (92.961 mph), with Tim Pappas sixth in the No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i at 1:35.292 (92.898 mph).

Billy Johnson qualified seventh in the No. 64 Matt Connolly Motorsports BMW 330ci at 1:35.453 (92.741 mph), followed by Ed Magner, who qualified eighth in the No. 48 WTF Engineering Chevrolet Cobalt at 1:35.457 (92.737 mph). David Haskell starts ninth in class at 1:35.627 (92.572 mph), and Toronto’s Michael Thornley completed the top 10 in the No. 74 Kensai Racing Acura TSX at 1:35.960 (92.251 mph)

I'm not surprised it did well on the track. Regardless of what many misinformed people believe, the Redline/ Cobalt cars handle extremely well due to there excellent balance. The Redline/ Cobalts have a 59/41 front to rear weight bias.

For comparison, the SRT 4 is at 64/36 and the RSX S is at 61/39.

My initial thoughts exactly! LMFAO

It's great to see it beating rx'8s, rsx's, and bmw's in its first year on track. I look forward to seeing what more tuning brings.

The show you how to build an EXACT GRAND AM CUP COBALT in the new GM PERFOMARANCE BUILD BOOK. Picture by picture details, part numbers, suppliers. etc. They even make complete body panels (the whole car) in carbon fiber.

I actually ended up watching the whole 2:30 hour race and the cobalt did awesome, the 32 cobalt was in the front the first half of the race until his tire man at the pit screwed up then they lost some possitions but if the acura was doing well then it would of been and even better race but it was coool to see cobalts in the front

I was at the track and they looked really strong, I was impressed by all three of them near the middle of the race they got spread out more due to piting. The Scada Pac car looks great his hood was flapping up the back straight though and I was surprised it was still there after a while. Those new Mustangs sound like V6's when they go into corner eight kinda odd. I only watched the race till about 5:00 and then went back to the small track for the solo1 guys. The Miata race wasn't too bad either pretty entertaining.

Forget the stock SS model, I want one of these!

They look street legal, are they? (I don't follow Grand Am racing...)
