Might buy a bike, need some advice
Wednesday, June 15, 2005 11:27 PM
Yeah, I need to take some miles off the Z so I can baby it until I work up enough cash and time to fix it. I've also wanted a bike for a while, so I might buy one. I'm looking for a used sport bike.

Now, this is my first bike. I've been looking around and it seems sport bikes are rather hard to find right now. The local honda shop has a 95 Kawasaki GPZ 1100 for like $2500. Has 24k miles and seems to be in very good shape. The only thing that concerns me about the bike is that 1100cc is way more bike than somebody should start out on. Would this be a problem for somebody to learn on? I would think yes, thats a lot of ponies between the legs of a beginner...

Any other recommendations on bikes? I was thinking like a 600cc or 750 at the most. I want to take this back and forth to work (130 miles round trip), so it has to cruise on the highway without struggling.

Suzuki SV 650. There are tons of them availble, great beginer bike. The bike has a V-twin that sounds awesome with a pipe.

A 600 is the biggest I would go since you're a beginner. An awesome beginner bike is a Honda CBR600F4i, a couple of my buddies bought one for their first bike and they love it.

I took a look at the new CBR600F4i's and they are beautiful bikes, unfortunately I don't have $10k for a new one.

The next closest thing I found was a 2002 Katana for $4200. I might be able to talk them down to $4k but that was about $500 more than I wanted to spend.

My buddy has a 2001 CBR600F4i, that bike has been around for a long time, the entire CBR600F line has been around since the early 90s, so if a F4i is too much then there is the F3, or even older F2

I see it as being no different than getting a new 600 bike. The specs I found said it had 120 hp at the fly and weighs over 500. Only thing I'd say about that big of a bike is going to be the weight of it. If you're a bigger guy I don't think it should be that bad plus its carburated so the throttle won't be a break neck as a FI bike.

Although I have to agree a used CBR is a great buy. I've always liked the R1's and R6's but that's alot of dough.

I had a Katana 600 and now own a CBR 600 F4. They were both good bikes to me -- and good beginner and intermediate bikes IMO.

I personally wouldn't go bigger than a 750, for a beginner, plus the bigger the cc the more the insurance.

Something that is really important that nobody has asked is how big are you? It makes a big difference if your 2ft 6 or 6ft 2.

No, unfortunately this will be my first riding experience. I've ridden quads (obviously not the same thing) and have done very well. I went snowmobiling this last year for the first time with something newer than 1975. Not a mile from where we took off I was following the lead guy at over 100mph. Takes some balance and skill and I know I pick these things up extremely quickly.

Graden-

I'm 5'10" and about 220. Going to be dropping some wieght soon so I hope to be 190ish by the end of the summer.

I'll take a look at bike trader and see what they got, thanks.

Yeah......since it's your first bike a 600 or a 500 would be perfect. Once you get the skills down you'll be ready to upgrade. The Katana is a good beginner bike.....easy to ride. I took a Katana 600 on a test ride for a buddy of mine looking to buy. It was fast, but it also had engine work, GSX-R 750 carbs, exhaust, etc. He didn't buy it.

Let us know what you get!

$4k was about my budget, provided my turbo kit sells. I can't take out a loan so thats about as high as I can go.

Personally I would start out with a 600 but wouldnt go with anything over 750.. CBR600 is an awsome starter bike.. Katana's are a really long heavy bike, hard to hold up and no way to do a wheelie

I don't know about that man.......seems suspect! Plus all those aftermarket parts. Unless they are rich and don't care to take a loss like that.

As an experienced rider who has helped a few people get started I will chime in.

A 500 is a great starter bike (GS500 or the like) but at 220lbs that bike will be a bit sluggish. Sluggish is good for your first season as you have a lot of learning to do (it never ends, but in the begining there is way more).

I would recommend a 500, or a 600cc carberated sportbike like the F2 F3 or F4, not the F4i and certainly nor anything with "RR" in it's name. I have many many years of experience and my 600RR still schools me once in a while. The rear wheel spin will freak you out and could cause a crash. I run with Michelin Pilot sport tires (medium stickiness) and at the beginning of a ride (before the tire's heated) I can light that sucker up, sometimes while turning. That said, I would stick to something NOT injected for now.

Other considerations .. A can-o-tuna (Katana) is a very stable an managable bike that still has plenty on umph to get you going. Then there's the SVs, similar handling etc. Both well liked by their owners out there.

You can kill yourself on any bike. The more power it has the bigger the splat.
Buy great, NEW gear, head to toe. Spend you money there, and don't get cheap. Everyone crashes, good gear is the difference between no or minor injuries, and hospital visits. Arai, Suomy, etc helmet, good gloves, Alpinstar or Sidi boots and FULL LEATHERS. Many people buy just the jacket not realizing that there is a an artery in your leg that can drain your body of blood in under 3 minutes. Gear is serious business, don't mess around, you'll have your gear for many years so do it right the first time.

Get your self a F2 or F3 (or similar), get great gear, take a MSF course (a must for a novice rider and worth every penny, I promise) and ride at your own pace. Too many people crash trying to keep up when riding with others. Don't, they can and will wait for you. As your skills improve you will find it easier and easier to keep up. You cannot improve your skills from a hospital bed or a grave. I have lost too many friends to their egos, I can't stress enough that you need to ride at your pace not anyone else's.

Have fun, play safe and good luck in the search.

hey i cant speak for others, and i hear about this kind of thing all the time. I learned on a 2004 750 GSX-R and 2 months later i purchased a 2005 1300 GSX-R Hyabusa Special Edition. I think its all about respect of the machine you have, and the brains not to abuse it.

If some one handed you a Ferarri Modena for your 1st car would you decline it and say "no its too much for my 1st car?"
