VW and Audi Phatbox $120 shipped, 20 GB

Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know of a very good price on a 20GB phatnoise for VW and Audi....

The price for these was $800 one year ago, right now most dealerships charge $200 for it now, but this one dealer in Columbus, Ohio only charges 109 + shipping = $120. if you want mounting hardware, add another $15...

This is an amazing price for 20GB's worth of music, if you dont know what Phatnoise is, heres a description from their website...

Quote:

No more decisions. No more limits. Your music, anywhere you go. Thanks to the PhatNoise Digital Car Audio System from Volkswagen, you can now store thousands of digital music files (up to 20 GB) on a single cartridge, create hundreds of interactive playlists with the Music Manager software (included), and access it all quickly and easily from your dashboard. Wherever you go, there you have it.

Finally, here's the Phone number for Shawn at 614-552-5432

The best customer service i have ever received, he provided me with a tracking number within 10 minutes of me ordering...

I have this exact thing in my car, only it's not a VW-made thing.

It's the OmniFi DMP1, and I have the DMS1 sitting in my room. The DMP1 has a 20GB hard drive that I load with music, just like this thing. And it can wirelessly update every night through my home network. The DMS1 is a digital music streamer, that streams the music off of any computer in my house that has the software. I have it hooked up to some $50 speakers, it's nice.

Anyways, I bought both as a package, with all necessary hardware and software and everything, for $200. The only problem I had was that my stock deck doesn't have inputs (the DMP1 hooks up just like a CD changer), so I had to go FM modulator for it. But, it's still way cool. No more CD's for me!

Oh yeah, I got mine from woot.com. They come up every once in a while (for those who don't know, woot.com only sells 1 thing a day. It changes every night at midnight central time).

yeah, yours might be the same, i know that this is just like the kenwood music keg. they dropped the prices on these because they basically lost all of their market because of the IPODS.

The phatnoise also announces the playlist/artist/album/songtitle throught a female voice through your speakers if you want. this way you dont have to take your eyes off the road.

I cant wait for my unit to come in tomorrow, im gonna drop about 5 gigs of music onto it.. ill also let you guys know how it works out.

cheers!

Dang, mine doesn't have any kind of voice thing, but it does let you navigate through the songs by title, artist, album, or genre, using the faceplate that came with it.

I'm planning on getting some pics today, I hope you get some up of your new thing too.

I have a Kenwood Music Keg in my car...I got mine for $150 from Best Buy (before they pretty much stopped selling Kenwood products). I have to say, that's the best investment I've made in my car thus far...nifty little gadget. My only problem is that my Keg came with a 10GB catridge and well my music collection is already pushing close to 20GBs. Getting a larger catridge has proved to be a pain due to the fact that the catridges range in price from $230 - $400 for a 40GB - 80GB catridge depending on the person's needs. I also think that the Volkwagen price is something that VW dealers are doing on their own and not really advertised any where else...I could be wrong. PhatNoise is still selling their Phatboxes for a retail price of over $700 from their website (which is ridiculous) but I am of the belief they are no longer actively making Phatboxes (after cancelling plans for the release of Phatbox II...which was supposed to provide DVD/Navigation support for cars equipped/supplied with those features) as they have focused their attention on iPod connectivity and incorporating Phatnoise mCD into aftermarket CD players. My information may be wrong, but that's how I'm hearing things. It's extremely difficult to find Kenwood Music Kegs, especially the 910s, as they are becoming rarer and rarer.

I've been e-mailing PhatNoise for years trying to get them to make one that's specific for GM vehicles but refused thus far saying the market isn't big enough (even though they make Phatboxes for Ferraris and Porches no less) however, the closest they've come so far is Mobile Media which is featured on the Uplander mini-van. It's definitely a great investment if you can find one at a decent price, and you drive long distances on a daily basis like I do, it sure beats carrying a book of CDs around or visors full of CDs in the car.

yeah this is a VW dealer only thing i believe. I called my local dealer and they said that the price is $200 without the mounting hardware. he tried to tell me that i should buy it since the price just dropped from $800. i told him that a dealer in Ohio is selling them for $109 + mounting hardware. he told me that he could not level with that, then i said buh bye

i think this is a great price since i dont have to replace my Monsoon OEM headunit. this is better than hooking up an ipod to the headunit since i dont have to plug it in/out all of the time in fear of my car being broken into because of it. theres also no cluttering in the car (wires, plugs etc...)

i cant wait to try this @!#$er out

A couple pics! (warning, huge pics)

Here's the hard drive housing. It's mounted in the glovebox, upside down. The hard drive comes out so I can plug it through a USB port into my computer and load it with songs, or I can do it through the wireless network adapter that's in there, under the dash.
Hard drive pic.

Here's the faceplate. This is what I use to control it. There's a scroll wheel, and buttons to sort it by title, artist, album, genre, etc. Pretty easy to use. Only problem is that it doesn't fastforward or rewind.
Faceplate pic.

This is a little shot that shows the control switch for the FM modulator, since I had to go that route.
On/off switch.

Lemme know if anyone has some questions...
