Dodge Challenger is in the works

Watch out, Ford Mustang. Dodge is preparing a challenger.

In fact, it's likely to be called Challenger.
Chrysler plans to resurrect a respected name from the pony car era for a rear-wheel-drive Mustang fighter. The car is expected in 2009 on the LX platform, the basis of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum and Charger.

It is a two-door, essentially a competitor for the Mustang. The sport coupe is planned to debut in 2009, when the next-generation LX vehicles are scheduled to be re-engineered and restyled.

Chrysler is hoppping to sell 60,000 to 70,000 of the cars a year. An assembly site was not known yet. Production of the 300, Magnum and recently introduced Charger is expected to fill Chrysler's Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant.

The redesigned 2005 Mustang has exceeded initial sales estimates. Ford expects to build 192,000 Mustangs this year, and most retail units are selling at a price near the sticker.

The 1970-74 Challenger was Dodge's answer to the original Mustang, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Mercury Cougar and AMC Javelin.

And, yes, the original Challenger had a Hemi V-8. So will this one.

Lets hope they don't ruin the Challenger legacy as they have with the Charger.

how about they stop putting out all these old clasics...let them be. Just bring back the recently retired Camaro & T/A. They have to have a Camaro restyle in the works....they just have to.

If any manufacture was to actually do this it would be Dodge. Dodge has quite a few concept cars that became production. I look forward to seeing this come out. Maybe I'll hold off buying something here in the future and get one of these if it's nice!!!

Well, you got it partly right. They had a few concept cars that became production before Deiter Walrus-face and the rest of Daimler attached it'sself to Chrysler like a leach and began to suck the life out of the company. It's pretty sad that everyone at Daimler thinks Chrysler is better off because of them. Mr. Zeitsche <sp?> even said in an article that was published in Motor Trend where he stated that the first-gen LX cars (300, Charger, Magnum, ect) would not have been nearly as reliable as they are since they now use "Mercedes design architecture and engineering principles" Gimme a break. Mercedes is not exactly known for high-quality cars, and Chrysler can do a better job with Mercedes parts than Daimler can.

Two things come to mind when I see press releases like this: Lack of creativity and make a quick buck.

Honest to Pete, I am so over this whole obsession with resurrecting old cars! Enough of the (relatively) recent original Mustangs, Chargers, VW Bugs, etc., still exist and can be purchased pretty inexpensively. I want a NEW car, not a re-hash of the old ones!

This whole trend just screams to me: We (insert car company name here) are so lame and so insecure in launching new product that not only will we re-cycle an old name, we'll even recycle the styling too! it's no wonder the Asian producers are kicking our ass*s!

Look at VW. They launched the 'New' Beetle several years ago and sales were great. Then they tapered off and now they're refreshing the styling. But the big question is this: What's next? A 21st century version of the Rabbit? Same deal with Ford and the Mustang. What happens in five years? We get a new rendition of the 1973 SportsRoof?

Even VW who started this trend (IMO) was smart enough NOT to launch the modern version of the Kombi (VW Bus), at least in the 'States. I'm sure some of that had to do with the fact that VW doesn't sell maybe 10-12 vans a year here anyway. But they didn't roll it out for the rest of the world, either. Maybe they're getting a clue...

I'll say it again... I want a NEW car!

if it looks anything like the new chargers, im gonna puke.

itll probably be either a 4 door, or maybe theyll make it a hatchback wagon. and then theyll put on that damm "cross hair grille" like every damm dodge vehicle has. then theyll put a hemi in it. then theyll fukk it the rest of the way up but still call it the challenger. you know what....? its gonna explode like the challenger.

chrysler left a seriously bad taste in my mouth when they redid the charger. if they cant get that right then there isnt much hope for them.

Dodge sucks, it was cool back in the day when thery had all the muscle cars of chargers and challenges and coronets and demons and so forth, but it seems like all that dodge is doing is using old ideas, everything that they have is old news. The Rumblebee/ Superbee, the hemi, the charger, the Ram Daytona which is riduculously retarded, the power ram, and now the Challenger, let the 70's muscle cars baist in the glory that they had back then and stil do now, don't bring it back and end up ruining an awesome tradition. Dodge need to revamp thre entire line up, from the ground up. cause right now, i thnk that there products suck.
