Ninja 500R stats, reviews, etc.

I'm almost certain that on either Friday or Saturday I'm gonna be rolling a new one of these bad boys into my driveway. But, before I buy one, I want to know some stuff about it, like 1/4 mile times, top speed, handling characteristics, anything else. Also, where can I buy jet kits, exhausts, other performance equipment, etc? Thanks to the ever-helpful JBO for any, well, um, help.

PS - don't tell me to get a bigger bike, cause it can't (and won't) happen.

It weighs around 450lbs, 1/4 in around 12.5, about 55 hp. Its going to be very piggish compared to a new 600 but its a good first bike if you've never ridden before. The suzuki bandit 600 is around the same price and a much better bike or so I've heard.

its not worth modding. that is a starter bike. period. if you want more power, you dont want that bike. by a 600 at least or youll regret it. i bought a brand new r6 for my first bike and i was happy for about 3months, then i realized i should have just bought the 1000 and been done.

If it's your first bike it's a fine choice. You will want something like that for the first couple months of riding. Then you'll be ready for something new. A 600 is OK for a first bike but everything happens twice as fast. As a novice, you will make mistakes, on the 500 you'll have time to correct them, or at least, the get-off won't be as bad.

When you are ready to move up concider this. the only thing a 1000 can do on the street better than a 600 is stunt. If you want to wheelie and what-not, a litre bike is for you. If you want to handle corners like mad a 600 can do it as well or better than a 1000 and it will be less expensive to insure. On top of that the straight line speed of a new 600 is very good, but a 1000 will out run them. My 600 runs mid-low 10s, my buddy's 1000 runs mid-high 9s. As you can see, both are stupid fast with the 1000 having the advantage. My bike tops out at 286 km/h, his tops out at 305 km/h.. Again, stupid fast either way.

Ride safe, wear full gear, good luck.

Browneye: It is a great starter bike. My first bike was a 1990 EX500(Ninja) and I learned a lot on that bike! And yes I DID mod mine. Mod list: Targa Full cowl, Muzzy 2-1 exhaust system(loud as hell), Stage 2 jet kit, Ignition advancer, fender elimination kit, K&N filter, Bridgestone Battlax tires. It was much faster than stock and fast enough for the street. Again.....great starter bike!!

I'll have to find some pics of it!

Oh yeah.....Dennis Kirk has a lot of good parts. There is another really good one, but I can't remember off hand what the name is.

Here are some pics I found. I only paid $1700 from a buddy of mine and it had 3500 miles. Disregard the pink strips...LOL.....it was back in 1990!

When I first bought it and put on the Full lower cowl:

After Muzzy 2-1 exhaust system(had to remove the center stand) and a few other mods:

no, a 600 is EASIER to stunt on. less weight and easier to lift and control.
only kind of stunt a 1000 could do better is like a half miel wheelie due to the extra power. otherwise 600's are better for stunting.

and NOBODY should EVER get bigger than a 600 for a starter bike no matter HOW great you think you are. yes soem people have starte with 1000 and not got in horrible wrecks. however the majority of ALL beginners cant even handle 500's.

when gettign a bike you need to be a point in yoru life where you are FAR FAR away from the teenage mentality of nothign can happen to me. because sadly as a beginner somethign WILL happen to you. ask ANY veteran rider.

I'm talking about modern bikes.. I don't know when you looked last but 1000s don't weigh more than 600s anymore. My buddy's ZX10R is 5 lbs LIGHTER than my CBR600RR, and has almost 60 more BHP. 1200s and 1300s are still heavy. The easiest bike to wheelie (in the sportbike class) seems to be the 2002 Honda 929. It's not all about weight either, the weight bias has a lot to do with it. The 929 wheelies easier than the current CBR1000RR because the 1000 has a stacked tranny, keeping the weight forward (better for cornering). My 600 has the stacked tranny and the rider is positioned 17mm more forward than the previous CBR600F4i. 600s are all about lap times these days, and that means cornering like mad (short wheel bases and forward weight bias), and having brakes that make you think you tossed an anchor out.

CBR 600RR 117BHP 373lbs (dry) (18 litre fuel capacity)
Kawi ZX10R 172BHP 368lbs (dry) (17 litre fuel capacity)

Fueled and ready to go, he is even lighter.

I agree with what you said about starter bikes entirely.. Learn on something tame, supersports and superbikes are far from it.

well, i went yesterday and found the one. i applied for the financing kawasaki has going on right now (4.9% for the first 2 years, 9.9% after that) and got approved without a co-signer. i'm calling around monday morning for insurance, and then i'm going to pick it up at about noon. i'll take some pictures (maybe )

tribals, that thing looks really good. i want to get slip-on mufflers, at least, so the bike is louder (and therefore, more noticeable in traffic). i also am going to get a fender eliminator and smaller signal lights. i might also have my buddy re-cover the seat in suede or alcantara

Cool! You have to post pics!! I miss my bike, but I am ready for an upgrade. I was going to get the slip-on mufflers, but I wanted to get as much performance as I could out the the 500. I had to install a jet kit after the exhaust change, but you should be ok with the slip-ons. Targa makes a lot of cool upgades.

I would recommend a Targa Full lower cowl......it completes the bike...IMO.

Insurance shouldn't be a problem unless you want full coverage. In any event, you should have gotten an sv650s

im waitin to take a riders course at the college around here so i can learn the basics before i purchase my bike but yeah ive heard 500cc bikes are good to start on. buddy of mine who has some loaded ass parents bought him a gsx-r 750 (cuda been 650) but ne ways i went over to his house and this was a badass lookin bike. but it turns out he had never been on a bike in his whole life, not once. he just knew alot about there power. anyways week later he lays it over somehow and cracks all the plastic, breaks a mirror, bends the exhaust pipe somehow and has a torn acl. of course the broken ass bike sits in his garage as we speak waiting to be sold.
his example is why im gonna start on somin smaller that i can learn on. a guy i work with is sellin a hayabusa but ive been warned to stay away, so i probably will

Don't even get on the back of a Busa... They are all about straight line speed, and they have tons of it. They can be hard to control and you're putting you life in the pilots hands if you get on one..

Play safe. Have fun, learn at your own pace.. To many accidents from novice riders trying to keep up with vetrans.. Just take your time, you'll get there soon enough.
