To anyone with a Jeep wrangler
Friday, May 20, 2005 7:36 PM
Well my woman totaled my cav last weekend. So I have been looking to get a new ride. I have decided on a jeep (have wanted one forever). I won't be buying new ( I am poor ), but I am looking to spend around 15k. My question is what should I look out for when buying a used jeep, how many miles do the 4.0 inline six usually last, and how many if any problems have you guys had with yours?

I don't really know much about the newer wranglers, I'm keepin my eye out for an old CJ but the inline 6 is one of the best engines ever made, Most last til at least 250k some guys get even more. I'm running a cherokee now and the only problems I've had are with the cooling system, but that's a design flaw on the older cherokees most wranglers don't have that problem.

I am never on during the weekends and just saw this post:

If you are looking into spending around 15k for a Wrangler, you will find a lot of used ones that are in really good condition for that price tag. I bought my 2004 Wrangler brand new for around 16,500. I did downgrade some things to get it down to that price but I am sure you want some of the nice accessories that is comes with.

If you are looking into any used ones that are already lifted or had some suspension upgrades, I highly suggest jumping underneath to look at the suspension components to make sure nothing is horribly damaged or tweaked out.

DEFINITELY look into getting the 4.0L motor. That motor is just a strong motor hands down. My girlfriend has a 4.0 in her Cherokee with 175,000 miles, my buddy has one also with close to 230,000. Other than just basic maintenance that needs performed, they really didn't have anything go wrong.

I am currently at 50,000 on mine (which is a lot for the year of my TJ) and I haven't noticed anything wrong with it yet. I just do the rountine maintence and she runs like a champ.

I would also test drive some if you are interested, a lot of people don't really care for them because of the stiff ride they have and the noise if you have a soft top (not very quiet at all). If you do get one in a soft top, just remember that it won't keep your interior completely dry, there might be some times in very heavy rain that water might leak into the interior. It is nothing tooooo bad to worry about.

Hope that helps you out a little. I am sure I am forgetting a couple things but if I remember them, I will post it up.

Have a good one,
Justin

^^ I figured you would post some good info justin. But anyway I am not look for anything that has been modded already. I really rather start bone stock and go up from there. I have been crusin jeepforum.com trying to get more info. The stiff ride and road noise dosen't bother me and a little water isn't nothing. I'll probaly be taking out the carpet any.
I am looking to get a yellow one I have found five in my price range but all are autos. I really don't want an auto but my woman might have to drive it once in a while. I have heard that most people that take them off road perfer the auto anyway. I plan on looking harder for one this weekend but some dealers around here are asking to much as in 18k of a 2000 with 60k miles. That is such BS.
On another note Justin I really like the stance of your jeep. How much did your set up run you and how do you like it?

I can chime in here.

My g/f has a 1990 YJ and that thing is awesome. If you are checking it out, make sure you get under the car (easy to do, don't have to jack it up or anything) and REALLLY take a look. Look on the tranny towards the transfer case to see if the main seal is leaking, big problem I see too often on YJ's.

Also, the carpet should be velcro'd on. Pull it back a little bit and you will see these circle plug things on the floor. These are basically so you can hose out your Jeep and not have to worry about it, it just drains out. CHECK THESE PLUGS FOR RUST. The factory silicone sealant isn't really that strong and they like to leak through and create big rust problems, especially in areas of the country where vehicles rust easily, and make sure that there is no rust, if there is, then it will spread...... quickly, that is if you go off-roading alot.

ALSO make sure that the 4x4 can go into 4-wheel Low. When we bought my g/f's YJ Wrangler, for some odd reason it would shift into 2L, and 4H, but not 4L. Haven't figured it out yet, been too hot lately and we have been too busy fixing minor details in the car and getting it tuned up for the summer (rough idle, don't ask).

But yes, those I-6's are insanely reliable. They are TQ monsters, not much for HP though. The 4-cyl in 1990 has more HP than the I-6, but oh man, the TQ in that thing is unbelievable. Don't expect to go fast in these things though, merging onto the freeway is like suicide because they were sooooooo slow until 1991 I believe when they started using FI rather than TBI/Carb.

Hope this helps man. Just look for normal things that can go wrong like you would with any other car, and if the price is low, it's probably too good to be true.

Holy bajezus that is a lot for a 2000. I think I have been finding some around my area in the 12-13k price range with around those same miles.

If you really don't want an auto, I would continue searching for what you want. You don't want to kick yourself in the end when you get something you really don't. Besides, maunals are pretty easy to get use to in Jeep, so you could always teach the wife how to drive stick. I am currently in the process of helping my girlfriend out with mine...it is progressing a little bit

As far as my setup and prices go, here they are below:
1. Rubicon Express Budget Boost Lift (2 inches): $200 from http://www.redrock4x4.com
2. Crager Soft 8 Black Steel Wheels (15x8): $33.95 ea. from http://www.quadratec.com
3. BFGoodrich All Terrain Tires (32x11.50x15): Around $400 from http://www.ebay.com

That is about it really for my lift. It is nothing too drastic yet but it is a nice little setup to give you a nice stance and to show people that you can hit the trails. Since this is my daily driver and I commute an hour one way to work, I wanted something a little bit bigger but not sacrifice a lot of gas mileage so this does pretty well so far.

If you start getting serious with the suspension, that is when you will be looking into the more expensive super flex or long arm systems.

I forgot to mention above in the first post but, Wrangler suck down gas like no ones business. I would prepare yourself to be at the pump every now and again depending on how much you drive it.

Have a good one,
Justin

Yeah I know they suck down gas. That is not a problem. I don't live that far from work and my blazer sucks down gass already. I am thinking of saying screw it and getting the auto. I haven't really ever owned a manual But I do drive a mac truck all frigin day and it gets tiring.
Thanks for the links to your set up. I want a little lift and don't want to spend a lot. I am not planing to do an hard core off road just yet.

MiKeDiRnTRuLeZ I am not planing to race this thing. I know they are slow. I was gonna trade in the cavy for the new yellow XB (it was gonna be the wifes) But since she wrecked the cavy her punishment is to drive the @!#$ty blazer and I get what I want.

damnnnn right, her fault is your gain.

Oh yeah, sorry to hear about your car getting wrecked, how did that happen anyways and was she ok after the accident?

Have a good one,
Justin

^^ That deal sucks. That jeep has most likley been beat on and put through through hell. Still 15k Is to much to be asking for that. I could get many jeep that are all modded up for 10k around here but that is not what I want.

Justin yeah she is ok. Was a little bruised up from the air bag. She was going to work with her mind in her own little world, ran a red light and hit some toyota SUV.
