Toyota recalls more than 750,000 vehicles

I'm surprised nobody has posted this yet, considering how many people complain that GM recalls are broadcast everywhere, and other companies are kept under wraps. This time its different, this news seems to be everywhere,

Toyota recalls more than 750,000 SUVs, trucks
Problems with front suspensions may hinder steering
Toyota's recall includes 2001-2004 model years of the Tacoma, the 2001-2002 versions of the 4Runner and the 2002-2004 Tundra and Sequoia.

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:08 a.m. ET May 18, 2005

WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp., in one of its largest safety recalls ever, said Tuesday it is recalling more than 750,000 pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles because of problems with the front suspension that could hinder steering.

The company said the recall covers 774,856 vehicles in the United States, including the 2001-2004 model years of the Tacoma, the 2001-2002 versions of the 4Runner and the 2002-2004 model years of the Tundra and Sequoia.

Toyota said the surface of a ball joint which connects to the front suspension may have been scratched when it was manufactured, which could lead to wear and tear over time.

Any excessive wear or looseness in the joint could force drivers to exert more effort when steering, allow the vehicle to drift and increase the amount of noise from the suspension.

Ming-Jou Chen, a Toyota spokeswoman, said the company had confirmed six cases in which the condition existed in the suspension. There have been no injuries associated with the problems.

Toyota said it planned to conduct a similar recall of the affected vehicles in Canada, Japan, Australia and other countries, but did not immediately have the number of vehicles that would be covered outside the U.S.

Chen said it was one of the largest recalls in company history.

In 1992, Toyota recalled about 550,000 Camrys from the 1987-1990 model years because of the potential for power door locks to malfunction and lock passengers out of or inside the vehicles.

In 2002, the company recalled nearly 400,000 subcompact and minicar vehicles exported to the United States, Europe and Canada because of improperly designed brake fluid pipes.

In Tuesday’s recall of trucks and SUVs, owners will be notified beginning in July and will be able to have the problem fixed at no cost, Chen said.

Oh and lets not forget the Prius, which apparently has a computer problem and is stalling or shutting down at high speeds. Not a recall yet, but its only a matter of time.

I don't understand why people complain about recalls at all. There is no way that there won't be some flaw with a car, they are all mass produced problems occur. A recall is a company taking care of there customer. They pay to fix the problem across the board most of the time before most people ever have the problem.

my moms camry has only had one less recall then my cavalier....and i dont get why some poeple make it such a big deal either, it only takes like a day and they usually will give you another car to drive

I don't have a problem with recalls at all.

I have a problem with the way recalls are publicized. It seems that just because its an American manufacture, the media will get the most attention out of it because it "hits closer to home".

And I really have a problem in people denying the fact that American recalls are broadcasted and publicized more than import manufacture recalls.

Hate to break it to you guys, but when a company recalls cars, they don't buy them back from you, they just fix the problem. No idea why a recall would cause or prevent you from buying the respective cars

Many other cars have recall but for some reason American car get more flak than import Benz and a recall on a serious problem with their brake but that was not publicized Honda had quite a few but not publicized.

Of course I understand that, I was joking. If GM would recall the entire car and give me my money back for it I could go buy a new one.... wow

Actually, Mazda had a buy-back initiative for their early build RX-7's, but that was because they were liars. And under certain "Lemon Laws" if any vehicle has so may problems in a certain amount of time, the manufacturer is required to buy back the car, if you so desire.

Not exactly true.
Mercedes had a problem with the navigation system and it computer on the E-class. Mercedes had no fix what so ever. So Mercedes soulution was recall the cars back and new ones were given.
LOL don't get me started on the electric brakes on as some one mentioned already^^.
Nothing worse then to see angry rich folks, but that was huge for Benz as they had to recall them around the world.

The Navigation System on the Mercedes weren't a critical part, but, the cost of fixing the problem was probably prohibitively expensive, and they just went with a new design that didn't have the problem.

It's not like a Disc-brake problem, or fuel-tank problem.

Mazda had exaggerated the HP claims on the RX-8 IIRC, they inflated the numbers by 10-15%... they couldn't get the HP claims unless they tested at 15 feet below mean sea level

Nope it was not hugely critical, nor was it a safety hazard. But the customers that had the problem recieved brand new cars. Mercedes did not want to ruin their reputation. Consider it a "bug" in the system. I remember to locate the dealer I work, it sent you like 75miles north from the dealer.

Didn't you mean RX-8? Because I thought it was those that were advertised with more hp then they actually came out with.
